Reporting Mike Dello Stritto

Current Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness may leaving officer weeks earlier than expected after finally learning Scott Jones will be the new sheriff in town.

There’s no timetable for stepping down early, but the sheriff says he’ll likely leave his post when Captain Scott Jones is up to speed.

In the meantime, the passing of the torch is unofficially happening behind the scenes.

”The Sheriff Elect will be coming to executive staff week for the first time.  My job will be to fade into the background, said Sheriff John McGinness.

McGinness is retiring after more than 30 years with the department.

It sounds like he’s headed to the private sector but isn’t talking about what his new job will be.
