City Councilman Tries To Secure Legacy With Donation

Sacramento (CBS13) --  A lame-duck city councilman is trying to secure his legacy by donating money from his district to a library already in his name.

Inside the Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library Branch there is a new story unfolding. It's a storyline of a local politician's legacy and money, but it's also turning into a bit of a mystery.  The unanswered question: will Sacramento councilman Robbie Waters' own $150,000 gift to the library already named after him be enough to keep his name on the branch after he leaves?

Waters has drafted an agreement that donates the $150,000 gift out of his own taxpayer district funds, with one big condition—if his name does come off the building, the money will be taken back.  But one thing is for sure, this is not a story of unconditional love.

Waters gift would be pulled from the library and would go straight to the dogs, literally.  He would want the money to go to the Sacramento SPCA.  Waters had worked for years to open a branch, and because of that, it was named in his honor.

Waters spoke from his council seat about how humbling that was.

"Normally you have to pass on before they name something about you," said Waters.

Waters is not writing his own legacy, and giving a conditional gift as one of his last acts.

The Sacramento City Council still has yet to approve the "so-called" gift, but the vote will come at Waters' final council meeting next Thursday.
