SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The iconic Iceland Skating Rink is set to re-open soon but one Sacramento city councilmember is delaying the opening set for next week.

Seven months after someone set the rink on fire, the building stands again but without a roof.

Sacramento City Councilwoman Sandy Sheedy is delaying the reopening saying Iceland needs to promise extra fixes down the road like a new roof and a new front entrance so customers aren’t entering in the alley.

“We would like a roof right now. That’s part of the reason we’ve done a non-profit. We need to raise a million dollars,” said Iceland Director Terrie Kerth.

The rink wanted to re-open in time for their 21st Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 9th but the earliest the city council can look at their plans is the 14th. So there’s no telling when people will skate again.

why do you need a roof to ice skate….? downtown the rink has no roof . the ice rink in Folsom also has no roof. if they would let you open this way then YOU COULD RAISE THE MONEY TO GET THE ROOF. SANDY IS A MEAN RICH PERSON THAT WANT THE WORLD TO REVOLVE AROUND HER. PERHAPS ONE DAY SHE WILL HAVE A PERSONALITY OR A LITTLE BIT OF COMPASSION? BUT WHO KNOWS ? You go Sandy… You have turned out to be a real piece of work just like Ted. Hey everyone…Remember her husband Ted Sheedy? Look up his past ‘actvities’ years ago while in a county vehicle. Sandy’s blocking this is political move and nothing more. Remember her at the next election…I WILL.

I am wondering what needs to be done to reopen. Why does this Sally Sheedy person have so much control over this issue when the community supports this ice rink?

If the Maloofs or Randy Paragary were asking to open Iceland, Sandy would have allowed the public in with the fire debris still in place. The fact that the owners of Iceland are relying on all the things that make this city great (volunteers, donations, community spirit, and hard work) and not the City Council to reopen the rink, predictably, makes city leaders crazy. Let’s see how Sandy likes unemployment the next time she’s up for reelection.
