Suspect Arrested In Barber Shop Shooting

SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP) -- Sacramento County Sheriff's detectives have arrested a parolee believed to be involved in the barber shop shooting in South Sacramento on Tuesday that left two people dead and five others wounded.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says 24-year-old Lonnie Orlando Mitchell was taken into custody this morning in Southern California.

They say the California Highway Patrol helped deputies stop the suspect's vehicle near the Grapevine on Interstate 5.  There were two women in the car at the time.  They were identified and released. Investigators say it's still too soon to tell if Mitchell fired the shots that killed either of the deceased victims.

Mitchell was described by deputies as armed and dangerous.

Monique Nelson, 30, had just strapped her son into his car seat when she was shot in the chest, and detectives believe she positioned herself to protect her son, Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran said.

"She was found with her body over the young child," he said. "So we believe she did hear the gunfire."

A second victim, 20-year-old Marvion Barksdale, also died from injuries suffered in the shootout after being taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a chest wound, Curran said. Five other men were injured in the gunfight. All are expected to survive.

Nelson died at the scene, where Metro Fire and sheriff department personnel were seen attempting to entertain the toddler following the shooting. Her child was unharmed and has been reunited with family members, according to authorities.

Detectives believe Mitchell may have been one of the suspects who opened fire inside the Fly Cuts & Styles barber shop Tuesday afternoon, triggering a gun battle that killed an innocent bystander while she was strapping her young son into a car seat and a man inside the barber shop when shooting erupted.
