SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP) – Sacramento County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested a parolee believed to be involved in the barber shop shooting in South Sacramento on Tuesday that left two people dead and five others wounded.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department says 24-year-old Lonnie Orlando Mitchell was taken into custody this morning in Southern California.

They say the California Highway Patrol helped deputies stop the suspect’s vehicle near the Grapevine on Interstate 5.  There were two women in the car at the time.  They were identified and released. Investigators say it’s still too soon to tell if Mitchell fired the shots that killed either of the deceased victims.

Mitchell was described by deputies as armed and dangerous.

Monique Nelson, 30, had just strapped her son into his car seat when she was shot in the chest, and detectives believe she positioned herself to protect her son, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Curran said.

“She was found with her body over the young child,” he said. “So we believe she did hear the gunfire.”

A second victim, 20-year-old Marvion Barksdale, also died from injuries suffered in the shootout after being taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a chest wound, Curran said. Five other men were injured in the gunfight. All are expected to survive.

Nelson died at the scene, where Metro Fire and sheriff department personnel were seen attempting to entertain the toddler following the shooting. Her child was unharmed and has been reunited with family members, according to authorities.

Detectives believe Mitchell may have been one of the suspects who opened fire inside the Fly Cuts & Styles barber shop Tuesday afternoon, triggering a gun battle that killed an innocent bystander while she was strapping her young son into a car seat and a man inside the barber shop when shooting erupted.

PLEASE….if you know this man tell him to turn himself in to resolve this matter. It would be the right thing to do for yourself and everyone involved. Please!

  • Todd

Why are all these “parolees” on the streets??!!

  • Bling

And the Governator wants to put out 44,000 more just like him. Go figure.

  • Lee

How could the mother, Monique Nelson, have been protecting her 2 year old son by covering him AND be shot in the chest. That does not make sense.

  • justanotherturd

At what point does it become enough already? pathetic…

  • annoyed by stupidity

Why do you feel the need to comment about what the victim was doing? She was an innocent person who was likely standing in front of her child to protect him. Seriously, what a stupid and ignorant comment.

  • beautifulbrwneyes

I don’t think Lee was saying anything negative about the victim..just that the articles description of the position she was in when she was shot and where she was shot isn’t adding up.

See what I mean on his way back to Fresno

  • Rebel

What are you, stupid? He was caught on the Grapevine, which is way past Fresno last time I checked… Idiot

Why were the 2 female passengers released? Here he is 500 miles from the where he was supposed to be so obviously fleeing. Why were the females not charged for aiding a a fugitive?

  • Cin

They are probably the ones who turned him in.. They are not releasing how they new one of them probably set him up.

Commenting on the part about the victim covering her child……she died as a result of protecting her child so we can’t lose sight of that. This guy deserves to be in jail but the authorities haven’t said yet whether or not he’s the shooter.

  • brandon

i understand people lost their lives but the news channel have no right speaking on a deceased victim making them look bad by saying marvion barksdale no stranger to the police thats not right at all….
