ROSEVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) – The Roseville Galleria reopened Tuesday morning after a flash mob drew thousands of people and forced an evacuation.

The huge crowd of people preparing for a holiday-themed flash mob had to be evacuated at the Roseville Galleria mall over fears the floor could collapse.

Roseville officials said at least 5,000 people packed into the mall’s food court to sing Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” when the weight of the crowd sparked 911 calls from worried participants who said the floor began cracking.

Witnesses on the second floor reported feeling the floor move and shudder with loud bangs, officials said.

Fire officials ordered the mall to be cleared and ambulances were called to the scene. Many attendees seemed unaware of efforts to clear the area until announcements were made over the security loudspeakers throughout the mall.

The entire Westfield Galleria mall was evacuated briefly while inspectors looked at the damage.

Engineers said there was no significant damage to the mall and that all stores will reopen at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.

“The enthusiasm for the Halleluiah [sic] event tonight was far greater than anticipated by organizers,” mall officials said in a brief statement Monday night.

The event was organized by the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra.

“Flash mobs” — or surprise performances in public places — first gained widespread attention in 2003 and often rely on social media sites organize and record the events.

I guess this is another way to ensure the City of Roseville and the Galleria along with their employees are to have a very horrible Christmas and joining the FoodBank line

  • Sue Peterson Pirazzi

This is why it pays to shop early in the season!

  • dwr

Has anyone checked to see if there’s an Indian burial ground under this mall?

  • Coronus

I was just passing by, but it took me an HOUR to drive past. Close down the mall and people forget how to drive.

  • glp

Blame it on the maintenance worker just like the fire.

  • Mark

Better safe than sorry. I lived in Kansas City when the Hyatt Regency walk way collapsed, killing 114 and injuring 200 others. I personally know the first policeman on the scene, he still has nightmares about what he saw 30 years ago.

  • Michael

People are stupid! They are just getting to the point of recovery, and then these no brained numb skulls, go in there and destroy it? Makes sense if you are one of the idiots who attended!

  • JJ Skaboolie

you know you are from the Sacramento area when a Flash Mob at the local mall can’t even get their act together. Darn Gleeks.

  • http://theawkwardpea.wordpress.com The P.

Glad I shopped yesterday! Sing Christmas carols? Really? The mall was the best place for that idea, huh?

  • allyse

poor galeria… cant catch a break!!!

  • JJ Skaboolie

Stay away from the light Carol Anne

  • Christy Dolz

    hilarious….

  • Dew

    What is a flash mob?

  • Sherrylee Best

They were so stupid to even open that place up before it was totally fixed

  • Carrie

Is it just me or are all the flash mobs I see on the bottom floor, for structural purposes in the first place? Also, um…who would ANNOUNCE AND INVITE people to a FLASH MOB! Isn’t it supposed to be a fun surprise for the people at the mall? NOT free advertising or inclusion of HALF THE CITY? Really? Not a very responsible group to have done something like this at all. I am disappointed.

  • Bill

Unbelievable that you think this is some kind of conspiracy. Do you feel it would be better to pack in, then fall through to the level below?

  • Carmichael Craig

Tear the Mall down…. It’s everything wrong with America in one place !!!

  • Marv

Blame the Westfield boobs who thought this would be a great idea when half the mall is out of service already!

  • Robuttpimp

Ok Craig, will do since the Galleria only brings in millions to the commuity and employs tons of good people! Now go back to buiying your Wrangler’s at Wal-Mart since you think that is what America is.

Ignorance is on the loose tonight folks!! Sheesh!!

  • Marv

Could not agree more Carrie!! This is just plain ignorance at its finest hour!

  • ruth

the cops not helping to get people out of the parking lots was the worst experience of the evening….

  • iHateRoseville

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new mall!

  • RosevilleReallyReallySucks

‘Galleria’ is Miwok for ‘unlucky location’.

  • Jackson

It was an organized choir event, the flash mob was a copycat trying to ruin it. Morons.

  • Jeff

Again everyone spewing off and don’t know any of the facts. This was not put on by the mall. This is something that has been going on across the country in many locations. Yes this one was much more publicized then most.

  • Susan

It wasn’t the people driving that were the problem. It was the lack of any kind of direction from the Roseville PD.

  • Shawn Curnutte

So will they have the organizers of the event pay for it?
The event was organized by the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra….

  • Eric

I hate Roseville and all of its pretentious buttwipe residents. May their precious mall continue to have trouble.

  • John Shue

Another reason why I will never go to Roseville again.

  • Natalie Liedtke Alfidi

I will never shop at Roseville Galleria again! They were ridiculous to evacuate and stop the choir event from happening 10 minutes before! Flash Mob my butt! Yeah, there were a lot of people in one main area, but everyone was calm and waiting. And if the building is structurally unsafe, perhaps we should not shop there in the event that the 2nd story floor collapses and kills someone! Aren’t all buildings supposed to be built to withstand earthquakes? Tonight was hardly an earthquake! Just another ploy to keep CHRIST out of CHRISTmas! Two things can be learned here: 1. The galleria is not structurally safe, so we should not shop there, and 2. They don’t want our business, obviously.

  • fn2bhd

this was to be great experience for those in attendance. Yes it was overly promoted. These “Flash Mobs” have been happening across the country and can be checked out if you google “Random acts of Culture”. It is a shame that Roseville and the Galleria had to take advantage for profit of such a great thing!

  • fn2bhd

Your an idiot! This was not put on by the Galleria. It was down Sacramento Choral Society. It has been happening across the country!!! Also, next time you get in an elevator think about your dumbarse comments above. There are weight limits put on everything!!! even building!!! And yes I was there and there was to many people for both weight and public safety. If there had been a fire or another emergency at that time there would have been hundreds dead!!!

  • Mark

It is a crying shame that the only public gathering place that people can come up with in this country is a god forsaken shopping mall. If city planners nationwide weren’t such spineless cowards, we might actually have a town square where something like this could take place without all hell breaking loose. What a shock that cramming so many people in a mall would be dangerous. Don’t get me wrong, I love Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, and the idea of flashmobbing it is great and all… but every year we see consumerism eat more and more of Christmas’s soul. Maybe we should stop focusing so much energy on the mall, and more on the few community spaces we have left.

  • Eric Hogue

More video at Hoguenews tonight: http://hoguenews.com/?p=13170

  • Tasha

The building is safe. OBVIOUSLY there are fire and other hazards when there are 5000 people all in one area of our mall. maybe you should rethink your logic. and our mall is structurally safe for its normal traffic but when we have 5000+ people standing in one place, ANY BUILDING WOULD HAVE ISSUES.

That Choral Society should not have made this a public event, it would not have caused issues for our community….

  • AmericaTheBeautiful

Would you rather sing or have the floor collapse and 5,000 people injured and dead? You’re ignorant and we don’t want people like you at our businesses. Good riddance.

  • Mark

“Aren’t all buildings supposed to be built to withstand earthquakes?”

No. What gave you that idea?

“Just another ploy to keep CHRIST out of CHRISTmas!”

You’re right, the whole thing was a plot to make people forget about Jesus by making them leave the mall. Makes sense to me. /sarcasm

I’m sorry, Natalie, but you are a stunning example of someone with poor critical thinking skills.

  • tree

you are obviously unaware of the huge fire they had. there is most likely structural damage related to that to the floor beams due to the intense heat. if the fire could bow walls…

they probably were not aware of this damage from the fire until now and I think 5,000 is probably in excess of what that area should hold anyway

  • David Robarts

I was right there in the center of the group and saw and heard no signs of structural problems. The crowd was a bit too dense to deal with an emergency if something troublesome did come up though. I think they over reacted a little and should have asked the crowd to disperse from the food court area.

  • minnie

you idiot. First of all, the definition of “flash mob” is a large group of people that suddenly assembles in a public place. It does not insinuate any kind of temperament or “mob mentality”, as you are suggesting. And secondly, its not ridiculous to evacuate a building that is showing signs of structural instability. That is protecting the safety of the public; its not any kind of conspiracy against religious, social or cultural traditions and holidays. Stop being paranoid and get some common sense.

  • Sue Blount

Yep, you are an idiot….always have to bring Christ into everything. Most of the people shopping were there because of Christmas. It was merely a safety issue. Don’t think you not shopping there is going to break the bank.

  • Macie

I guess man didn’t descend from the apes. Apparently it was from cows…mooo!

  • Joe Blaylock

For those lamenting that this “Random Act of Culture” was scheduled at a mall for commercial reasons, promoting filthy profits, I would suggest that next time it be scheduled somewhere in downtown Sacramento where we could count on at least twelve or thirteen people being there.

  • steve

I was there…1: The floor did rock and move. 2: the Hyatt Hotel a few years back did collapse when its 2nd floor was overloaded, we left Galeria because of the danger. 3: the Fire Department did the right thing, they cleared the building immediately, 4. Did the mall management coordinate with the singing group, there should have been been no surprises, and the mall was understaffed for the crowd. 5. If this was advertised on website’s, then it was not a “flash mob”, and there was no “mob” behavior.

  • Don Livingston

wheres the ups guy giving maintence ORDERS

  • pulsev2

Just wanted to throw in another christmas insult you idiots.

  • Mark S Allen

I just wanted to buy myself a new pair of Ed Hardy Bedazzled skinny jeans.

  • fenceamerica

the problem is if you build town squares, its not carrolers who will go there its all the low life drug abusing thugs. Look at downtown sac….

  • Sharon Buck

Mark, you mean “another pair”….love ya from Stockton, Sharon Buck

  • Dennis Lynch

The flash mobs are good idea when someone with a brain is in charge, doing it at a packed mall just before Christmas is the most irresponsible thing I have ever heard of..

  • L.

Wow you’re a genius. If you’re in the middle of anything this big and um… loud? What makes you think you’ll hear anything? It was the people on the first floor who heard everything and reported it.

  • Jon

Have you ever worked in city planning? Redevelopment is paid for by TIF financing which means tax financing. Downtown parks don’t bring in tax revenue. So when you come up with a way for cities to finance development that fits your idea for a town square, let them know, they’ll love to hear from you.

  • L.

You all are a bunch of idiots lol. Listen to yourself. These people who did the “flash mob” obviously had a lot of Christmas spirt in them. And yeah unfortuately some problems happened? If the mall wasn’t able to handle all those people then maybe they shouldn’t have reopened the mall after a fire. So it’s no participants falt. If anything the mall owners take responsibility. Even still, they shouldn’t be blamed any way. It was just something fun to do. You people act like we need to walk on pins and needles for fear that some crazy stuff that will happen. Get over yourselves.

  • K

The comments above amaze me. Didn’t anyone stop to think of how many people have the Christmas Spirit? So many people took time out of their busy before Christmas schedule to drive out of their way just to bring smiles to the busy shoppers faces. Yes, it could’ve been better planned, but to me this is a testament to stopping and thinking about what’s really important in life and not about the shopping.

  • Mike

Way too many cake eaters with way too much money and way too much time on their hands. typical yuppie behavior

  • Geno Roboinson

Well, if the fire had damaged the building, they should not have re-opened in the first place. Expect crowds at Christmas time. That is what the merchants want. Only Scrooges and Grinches don’t realize that this is a season to worship the Lord. Perhaps the creaks and groans and buckling that some “felt” was just the building getting ready to join with the singers in the Hallelujah Chorus. If we don’t sing out, the rocks trees and buildings just might.

  • I LOVE ROSEVILLE

    Dear Author,
Please explain the backfire part. I don’t get it.

  • plankton

    Envy is a deadly sin,mikey.

  • Mike

and so are gluttony and greed

  • J. Ruggles

A flash mob should not have been advertised in advance. That spoils the whole premise of the thing. Bad Don, bad Jim.

  • J. Ruggles

And, by Don, I mean Don Kendrick, and by Jim, I mean Jim McCormack.

  • 916 lady

Wait, wait. If callers called 911 to report about the floor cracking and the floor was moving, did the engineers take a thorough look of the building? There is no reason for a mall’s floor to be cracking or moving regardless of how many people are on the floor. I would want a full investigation before shopping there. Seems like they didn’t do much to investigate the cracks…
