SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Nearly two weeks after a barber shop shootout killed a mother, strangers gave a huge number of gifts to the two-year-old boy she died protecting.

Monique Nelson was killed on December 14 when gunfire erupted inside a South Sacramento barber shop.

Nelson shielded her two-year-old son Jayden with her body when bullets started flying, and when the gunfight spilled into a strip mall parking lot, a bullet came through the windshield, fatally wounding her.

“It’s just a tragic time right now,” said Richard Nelson, Monique’s brother. “Holidays are supposed to be fun, loving, warm, and it’s not necessarily warm without Monique.”

Several restaurants and organizations held donation drives for Jayden and delivered the gifts to Richard on Christmas Eve, chipping in everything from Hot Wheels to bath toys.

“It just touched my heart to know these people are coming together to support Jayden,” Richard said.

Jayden still doesn’t seem to completely understand that his mother is gone, but maybe the kindness from strangers will help, Richard said.

“She’d be proud to know her kid’s in good hands,” he said.

Jayden has already received more than 100 gifts and more are on the way after Christmas, Richard said.

  • Alexx

i feel very sorry for that happen and lost his mother, no one took place for her mother to take care son best way. i pray for that boy give him lot of strength to live life better way. god bless that kid to live long.

  • Dave

That is not necessarily a bad neighborhood. And tragedies like this happen in even a lilly white area. Get a clue.

That little boy should get as many gifts as the house can hold. He has a long road ahead without his Mommy. She won’t be at his wedding or hold his children or his grandchildren. The gifts can always be shared or given to the other little ones in the family who also miss Monique and are sure to comfort the whole family. Anyone who scoffs at this probably doesn’t know someone who’s lost a loved one during the holidays.

Carrying a gun now is lilke carrying a candy…longer sentences should take place for people hurting other people with a weapon. Our teenagers need community centers with more sports/educational skills programs. Keep them busy and focus on things that will lead them to better ways of living. Crimes are on the rise everywhere. Families being broken is not a good thing for societies.

my thoughts prayers with family its sad that someone did this to her i wish the little boy marry christmas happy new year i know she better place with jesus

Nothing will ever replace that boy’s mother, but what’s wrong with people doing what they can to help. It’s not the toy, it’s the act of giving, and if you don’t get that maybe you should skip the holidays.

  • Ivory

Skip…you come off as an unfeeling, heartless SOB. You would have been better lto keep your inane thoughts to yourself. Makes me wonder if that had been your wife, if you feel the same??

  • Ivory

May this young boy and his remaining family be blessed for the rest of their lives? God bless and keep us all safe from harm!!
