Golden Gate Bridge Suicides Same A Previous Year

NOVATO, Calif. (AP) -- The number of suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge remained steady in 2010.

The Marin County coroner's office released its annual report Monday, putting the number of recorded suicides at 32. According to the coroner, another 75 people who "showed signs of being suicidal" were stopped at the bridge last year.

In 2009, 31 people jumped to their deaths from the famous span, and 34 people did so in 2008.

The coroner's office estimates that 1,400 to 1,500 people have taken their own lives on the bridge since it opened in 1937.

The report comes as officials work to raise $50 million to construct a suicide barrier, a net that would hang under the bridge to catch jumpers.
