Picric Acid Causes Level 2 Hazmat Situation At Garbage Facility

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) --  A hazmat situation at a Sacramento County garbage facility caused authorities to ask anyone within 300 feet of the area to evacuate, according to Sacramento Metro Fire.

This afternoon, about 6 oz. of Picric Acid, which is an explosive material, was brought to the North Area Recovery Station, along with a few other chemicals, making fire crews call out for a level 2 hazmat situation.

According to reports, a woman brought the chemicals to the facility to be disposed of.  Apparently, the substances belonged to her father who was a chemist.

A bomb squad was called out to the scene due to the nature of the substance and  helped detonate the chemicals with the help of a robot.  Authorities say that the chemicals were isolated, put in a tub and detonated in a nearby field.

The facility is located at 4450 Roseville Road.
