Trifecta Of Businesses Set To Open On K Street

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) --  The K Street redevelopment project has been going on for years, but now some destination businesses are opening, which is a good sign, but it could be short-lived.

There seems to be a collective sigh of relief along K Street; a long awaited trifecta of businesses is finally opening their doors, bringing with them the hope of a promised renaissance to downtown Sacramento.

Sid Garcia-Heberger, who runs the Crest Theater, has watched this project very closely.   She is also watching the new budget discussion closely, due to the fact that redevelopment dollars from the state are a must.

"The 700 block comes to mind most readily, that's the next big project being planned, and it's going to struggle if it doesn't have redevelopment dollars to help," she explains.

But struggle is an understatement, and the 700 and 800 blocks both already have secured agreements with several high-end developers.  Thursday, Sacramento's redevelopment manager released this statement:

"We are at a critical point in the K Street Redevelopment Project, and a significant budget cut to redevelopment would see these developments take their high-end concepts and look elsewhere."

Pat Livingston says he's been watching and waiting for the project for years, and he hopes the budget cuts won't do too much damage here.

"I don't think that would be a good idea at all, that's going backwards," says Livingston.

It's the kind of sentiment Sid over at the Crest says should propel this project forward.

"I worry that we could lose momentum, we're really picking up steam right now and we really need to finish what we've started," explains Sid.

But finishing what they started could require a number that it too steep for a budget that requires paying its contractual debts to medical and other first. It whittles away at the redevelopment pie, so more projects vying for a lot less money could be the end game here.
