SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — More students are competing for undergraduate slots at the University of California despite the rising cost of a UC education.
University officials said Friday the UC system received another record number of undergraduate applications for fall 2011.
The number of applications rose 6.1 percent to more than 142,000. The UC system reported seeing a 10.7 percent increase in out-of-state applicants and a 22.5 percent jump in international student applicants.
Among California freshman applicants, the university saw an 18 percent increase among Latinos and a 5 percent increase among Asians, while applications from white and black students rose modestly.
All nine undergraduate campuses received more freshman applications.
