Humboldt County Deputy Stabbed By Suspect

GARBERVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) -- A Humboldt County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after suffering a stab wound while trying to apprehend a suspect.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies spotted a suspect after responding to reports of a man brandishing a knife on the 800 block of Redway Drive on Monday morning.

The knife-wielding suspect fled, sparking a foot pursuit down Sprowel Creek Road, authorities said.

When deputies caught up with the man, a fight broke out, and the suspect was able to stab Deputy Chad Zeck in his abdomen below his bullet-proof vest.

A bystander jumped into the fray and helped subdue the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Jesse James Petty, authorities said. Petty was booked on charges of attempted murder of a peace officer.

Deputy Zeck was treated for his injuries at Redwood Memorial Hospital.
