PLACERVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) — Parents of Placer County students can now buy discounted drug tests from high schools, a tactic that county officials hope will help cut down on what appears to be a rising drug use rate.

The inventive anti-drug campaign comes on the heels of a recent survey from a Placer County high school that found “half of the students” use marijuana.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Department is making the $40 drug tests available for just $10 for parents in response to concerns over drugs in schools. The 10-panel urine test checks for methamphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy and other drugs, officials said.

A simple $2 test to check for alcohol is also available, said Deputy Laurie Bettencourt.

Parents can buy the tests on campus from the school’s resource officers or at the sheriff’s offices.

And my friends wonder why we home school…

Half of the 1600 kids smoke marijuana? So you’re telling us 800 kids at Placer High School in Auburn (of all places) get high? I thought they were one of the highest rated schools in the region. I’m in college with plenty of people from Placer High School and the people I’ve talked to never noticed all of this.. rampant drug use when they were there. They definitely never mentioned half of the school smoked marijuana, but hey it was just a survey. I really don’t believe half of all of the students at that school smoke pot.

  3. chris says:

Placer High School and Placer county has more of an Oxycontin / prescription drug problem than a marijuana problem. Which is why I live in Sacramento, because I do not mind marijuana users. There are many more robberies and burglaries by Oxycontin addicts than there are by marijuana addicts.

A “recent survey” is not an accurate portrayal of the entire student body, the correct claim to have made would have been to say “A recent survey from a Placer County Highschool found that “HALF THE STUDENTS SURVEYED”.To make the claim that half the students smoke pot is absolutely idiotic, In fact maybe the person who wrote this article should be drug tested for stupidity.

Weed rules Alcohol sucks , we all know this. If Alcohol was created today it would be banned but because its taxable its ok ? You wonder why kids are confused. Nearly every tribe/ community on the planet has some way to alter their perception after a hard days work , its human nature. I’m sure that more people die from legal drugs than illegal but that dosn’t matter dose it ? its all about hype and control.
When will the world wake up and realise that if i work hard and pay taxes i should be able to put anything i like in my body as long as i’m not a danger to everyone else.

    1. Ozlanthos says:

Spot on Bob! Although I think the real delineating factor here is “made by man” Vs “made by nature”. Marijuana=bad, Marinol (highly concentrated synthetic THC)=good. Opium=bad, Oxycontin=good. Personally I think it is an out-growth of christianity’s insistence that god made us, and the resulting psychotic tendency to attempt to destroy and or dominate all of the natural world.

      1. JamesD says:

Why drag Christianity into this you troll? A lot of Christians are in to being more natural, especially with our foods. How about we look at the fact? When the California medical marijuana case came to the supreme court, the 4 conservative, CHRISTIANS all voted that the Feds had no authority in the case. It was 5 of the LIBERAL, ATHEIST, and JEWISH members that voted to give the Feds control over marijuana, because they are power hunger, big government liberals. Kiss off.

“if i work hard and pay taxes i should be able to put anything i like in my body as long as i’m not a danger to everyone else.” I agree. Just don’t expect me to pay for your health problems.

Jim Fixx ran marathons…and died in his 40’s. Pete Maravich played basketball daily…and died in his 40’s. John Wayne smoked six pack of cigarettes a day and died in his 70’s. Who had the “more expensive” “health problem”?

      2. Jay says:

technically john wayne because he lived longer

so much for 30 years of drug education, same can be said for sex education , or sensitivity training

I remember these anonymous surveys in High School. None of us took them seriously and put down we used everything from cough syrup to cocaine, doesnt mean we actually did (although there were some)

    1. binxterdoodles says:

You’re absolutely right. We had them too. In the end it turned out that 2/3rds of our student body was on heroin. The difference though is that we didn’t get free drug tests. We got a lecture from the local police admonishing us for not taking the test seriously. Of course, we had the class clown raise his hand and ask the officer, “What if 2/3rds of us really do use heroin and we need help!?”

  8. pete says:

why always the argument that POT IS NOT AS BAD AS ALCHOHOL, ones real bad and the other is not as bad is not a legitimate justification for legalizing the stuff

    1. Ozlanthos says:

When was the last time you heard about someone coming home, taking a few bong-rips. then beating their wife into a coma?

    2. jeff says:

Sure it is pete..morally reprehensible for a society to jail people for something that is SAFER don’t ya think?Or were u even thinking before you wrote that?NO ONE is saying people sahould smoke up, but it is a better alternative to brain killing booze anyday for people over 21 IMO

  9. TIMERUNNER says:

well here we go , first , abortion on demand, then condoms on demand, then drug testing on demand, now drug testing supplies on demand, seems schools are doing a lot of demanding thses days. How about drug testing all the staff on demand by the parents of the kids on demand?,,,,sorry drug testing for the staff and resorce officers by the kids on demand? Now that would get rid of the insanity. The communist that are intruding in our families lives is uncostitutional, it violates the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. Wake up sheepers, your losing your nation and your kids to this type of Nazi controls
Seems the public schools are the new Ghettos’ wonder when that started and how that become the norm? Class we say the Happy 1960s? Oh yeah!! thats when we all became one. We have come a long way baby, that would be, fallen a long way…. down.

  10. Hank Warren says:

Useless marijuana laws, yet another violation of our rights. Add it to the list of gov’t violations of our right:
They violate the 1st Amendment by placing protesters in cages, banning books like “America Deceived II” and censoring the internet.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by molesting airline passengers.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars for foreign countries.
Impeach Obama and sweep out the Congress, except Ron Paul.

I decided to read this article, and at the bottom of the page there is an ad for The Don Geronimo Show. Last I heard, he had moved to Sacramento to do a show, this was about a year ago, if not mistaken. Haven’t heard from him. Actually, I have, wasn’t he in some sort of accident when he was at a show not so long ago? He did a faceplant when he fell offstage. Well, I remember him from the Don and Mike show, which basically ended back in 2008. I have to admit, that was a good show.

  14. Bethany says:

I graduated from High School in 1995 and we never had any drug problems, kid’s bringing weapons to school, school cops, nothing like that! We had good ‘ol fist fights and kids would bring pocket knives to school and the teachers never thought twice about any of it! My generation was ALOT more well behaved than kids nowadays, and everybody wonders why we have kids murder other kids, drug problems, and more kids having sex? I’ll tell you why! When we got in trouble at school, we didn’t get a slap on the wrist and sent to time out! We had our butts busted with a thick wood paddle! Then we got it again when we got home from our parents! But now, it’s considered to be child abuse! Am I the only one who sees a pattern here?

  15. Detter says:

    Their parents probably smoke…

  16. wapak says:

There should be a mandatory vaccine for this problem…?

  17. Mountain Republic says:

What a non-story. And for those of you at CBS 13 that didn’t know: Placerville is still in El Dorado County, not Placer County.

  18. psyguy says:

Things haven’t changed much in ten years. Half of my high school’s student body used marijuana too. Most are doing fine…

  19. Drdetmich says:

In the wake of the sad shooting in Tuscon, it is interesting to note that the shooter was a chronic pot smoker, and had easy access to it. It is a known fact that chronic use can induce paranoia and accelerate other psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia. If these facts are correct, there will likely be a higher incidence of psychiatric conditions in that county over time, as well as criminal/violent activity.

    1. jeff says:

sure, but did he also watch TV?there is a lot of psychotic stuff on TV…Did he drink or use or use other drugs? The whole pothead thing was dished out by the media to diss weed in the NEVERENDING campaign to prevent society from being less alcoholic….Cannabis is an anti cancer agent.Of course i agree mentally ill people shouldn’t smoke, but they shouldn’t watch the news or drink either…I think he was on prescription meds as well so lets ban those since ALL the mass shotters were either on them or had just gotten off of them!Unbelievable how people try to rationalize arresting 700,000 people a year…..Of which 699, 994 will never SHOOT anyone
