Yolo County Sheriff Considering Tent City For Jail Inmates

YOLO COUNTY (CBS13) -  The sheriff in Yolo County says Governor Jerry Brown's budget plan could result in more inmates being released back to the streets.

Sheriff Ed Prieto says his jails are already at 90 percent capacity, and according to a federal mandate, he must begin to release inmates.

As a solution, Prieto says he's considering putting up a tent city to house all the inmates.

Currently the Yolo County Jail holds 450 inmates.

A recent study shows the governor's plan could send 700 California prisoners back to Yolo County, meaning more inmates could be getting early release.

"We don't release any violent criminals, domestic violence, but we are releasing inmates fairly often," said Sheriff Prieto.
