Car Stolen From Hospital Lot While Owner Gives Birth

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A car thief stole a couple’s truck while they were in the hospital giving birth to their daughter, and now the couple needs to rely on family and friends to care for their baby.

“This is devastating to our family,” says Rachel Bendix.

Rachel and the baby’s father went to Mercy San Juan Hospital Wednesday morning.

“There was another car already in the parking lot, parking space,” says Rachel.

So while Rachel was giving birth, someone stole their 1984 red Toyota truck from the hospital parking lot.

“It’s crazy to think that security wouldn’t have seen it, it was literally in plain view,” she said.

Security cameras didn’t quite reach the parking space where the truck was parked, so the new parents don’t know who took off with their family’s only vehicle.

The couple had to ask Rachel’s stepmother for a ride home from the hospital.

“We’ll have to arrange a ride to drop off a prescription and then pick it up – she has to see a doctor by Monday,” says Rachel.

The Sacramento Police Department did take a report over the phone, and the truck’s license plate number is 8X58580.

Brandon, If it’s true the truck has been stolen 10 times before then how and why is it showing up in a tow yard? They’re not getting money from insurance if they’ve gotten the truck back. Is it an inside job and they’re hoping someone will feel sorry for them and donate a new one?!

They reported it stolen.. so law enforcement found it had it towed to a storage facility until they were contacted to pick it up..thats what happens with stolen cars

First of all “spotlight” is not what was trying to be achieved.. it was help within Sacramento to help locate the vehicle. The truck HAS been stolen before, BUT NOT 10 times, in fact once in the past 12-15 years. SO BRANDON, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. It IS sad to have my boyfriend leave to go home and shower and go pick up the car seat after I have given birth to our first daughter, only to find out, someone who stoop so low as to steal from a hospital parking lot. We have kept great spirits through all of this. We haven’t let suck a horrible thing ruin one of the best things that have ever happened to us, but it is still VERY devastating.

I want to say first, Congratulations on the new baby, what a wonderful thing to have a baby!!! And as far as the negative comments, it would not matter if your truck was stolen 50 times!!! Its wrong it sucks, and people need to get a life!!! I hope they find your truck, they were most likely after the Cat converter, Toyota trucks are one of the most vehicles to be stolen. My friend has a 89 toyota and they stole it and they only took the Cat converter!!! GOOD LUCK

What is Sacramento Police Department doing taking a report on a criime that clearly happend outside the City and in the County of Sacramento. Shouldn’t it have been the Sacramento County Sheriffs Office involved? Or, is this just shotty reporting by CBS13 News?

WOW! some people! first off anyone who knows me knows dang well that the most i ever had during pregnancy was ONE glass of wine! and whoever thinks my sister is a bad person is crazy as hell! my sister has a bigger heart than anyone

The good thing is the truck was found. Rachel is a great Mother and her daughter is a VERY HEALTHY and BEAUTIFUL baby! Everyone on here trying to make a sad situation into a personal attack GROW UP! There is no need for this all to be on comments. The writing is obvious this is 2 different women. 1 who has never met Rachel and the other is a jealous spiteful, pitiful person. Let’s move on!
