Photos: Weird CaliforniaPLACERVILLE, Calif. (CBS13/AP) — After more than a year in jail, Phillip and Nancy Garrido have confessed to kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard more than 18 years ago, according to Nancy Garrido’s attorney.
After a brief court hearing for Phillip and Nancy Garrido, Nancy’s attorney Stephen Tapson told reporters that Jaycee Lee Dugard met with Nancy Garrido this month discussing a plea deal. During the interviews, Tapson says Nancy confessed to kidnapping Jaycee.
Tapson also says Phillip has made a full confession in the hopes that Nancy could reach a plea deal where she would eventually be paroled and not spend the rest of her life in jail.
Earlier today, the judge in the case refused to release grand jury transcripts, mental health records and other documents in the case.
El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister ruled Monday that making the information public would jeopardize Phillip Garrido’s right to a fair trial.
Garrido and his wife, Nancy, are charged with abducting an 11-year-old Dugard from a South Lake Tahoe bus stop in 1991 and holding her captive for 18 years.
