Baby Unharmed After Being Thrown From Car; Parents Arrested

WINTON, Calif. (CBS13) – An 9-month-old baby boy is in protective custody after flying out of a speeding car.

Merced County Sheriff's deputies say the baby's parents had been arguing and sped off.  When they turned the corner, the back doors of the car opened and the infant, in his car seat, flew out of the car.

Witnesses say the couple stopped, put the baby back in the car and took off again.

After searching for more than an hour, deputies located the car.  The baby, named Alejandro, was inside and appeared to be unharmed but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Alejandro's father, 19-year-old Gilbert Saavedra, and the Alejandro's 16-year-old mother were taken into custody for felony child endangerment.  The 16-year-old also assaulted a Child Protective Services worker during the investigation, according to deputies.

Saavedra is being held on $50,000 bail.  The mother is being held in Juvenile Hall.  Alejandro is currently in protective custody.
