Rising Rivers Prompt Evacuations In Stanislaus County

- Sheriff's Evacuation Order

NEWMAN, Calif. (CBS13) -- A number of residents have been asked to evacuate due to the rapidly rising San Joaquin River, according to authorities.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department issued a voluntary evacuation order Tuesday evening for four RV parks and a sportsmen club near the river, which has risen beyond what officials expected. Recent heavy rainfall and melting snow in the Sierra foothills are likely to blame.

Deputies are going door to door in Catfish Camp, Martin Trailer Park, Thomas' Resort and Fisherman's Bend to warn residents in about 125 mobile homes to leave. The Turlock Sportsman's Club has also been evacuated.

There may be health risks due to due to disruptions in sewer, water and electrical service, authorities said.

County workers and the American Red Cross opened an evacuation shelter at 1033 West Las Palmas Avenue in Patterson.

River levels are expected to remain dangerously high for 4 to 5 days.
