SANTA CRUZ (CBS) — A Santa Cruz cat found with an arrow sticking through one ear and into its head was recuperating Tuesday after surgery at a veterinary hospital.

Nancy Paquin, the owner of “Max,” said the cat had been gone all weekend when it showed up at the family home in Santa Cruz Sunday night. Paquin’s husband let the cat inside the house, and that’s when the couple saw the protruding arrow.

“It went to the food bowl to eat and he had this arrow in his head,” she said. “It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen done to an animal.”

The cat was shot with a 12-inch arrow that appeared to come from a crossbow, Santa Cruz County Animal Services Manager Todd Stosuy said. No arrests have been made, but animal control officers have been canvassing the area around the cat’s home, trying to identify suspects.

The cat was taken to the Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital where X-rays showed the arrow had entered the base of its head. After veterinarians removed the arrow, the three-year-old housecat seemed to be fine — except for the hole through its ear.

“He’s doing really well,” Paquin said.

I hope whoever did this is found guilty & pays very dearly. It s some SICK S.O.B. who feels power to do this to any animal. If it was my pet, and I found out who it was , he would then know the MEANING of power, MINE !

    • JJ

I will add that I hope this person suffers worse than the cat…what a despicable excuse for a human being…

  • Yvonne Travers

What this world needs is an enema!

    • k

The way I took it was that it would get rid of the sicko and all those that fall into that group… You should go have a nice cup of soothing tea or something.

    • Rusty

      It was a metaphor, dummy.

    • Alison

Lamest metaphor I’ve ever heard… dummy? really? that te best you got? We should shoot you in the head, lol.

another reason why we should all keep cats indoors! why do people continue to believe that cats have magical powers to protect them from dogs, car tires, and arrows???

    • DerDeeDer

They do have magical powers. If it weren’t for that cat, that arrow could’ve stuck in a tree or some other living thing. Good thing the cat has strong magic.

  • anonymous 90802

I hope that whoever did this ends up with an arrow through their head.

  • Dave

Need to catch and severely punish the sicko who did this!

  • Heidi Christensen

WHEN will People start keeping their cats INSIDE! There is so much danger (as shown above) for outside cats and they are better in with a fenced in back yard or huge kennel to play in.

  • MMM

Really?? Keep your animals holed up inside a house alll day long?? I feel bad for your cats that sit in the window all day long, longing to feel the grass between their paws! The idiots who inflict pain on animals are the ones that need to be holed up in a small cell for the rest of their lives!!! If they are willing and able to hurt animals, imagine what they would do to a human smaller than them? Augh!!! Makes me sick to even fathom the idea!

  • Miriam

Catch the idiot, torture the idiot, then let all of us animal lovers have a turn at them!! We would be happy and thrilled to teach them

  • Steven McKinney

liberals make much better targets!!! i hope the cat is doing well!!!

  • Teri

It’s scary to realize what monsters we have walking among us. Let’s hope that Karma works her magic, sooner than later!! Unfortuantely keeping cats indoors would not eliminate the sickos.

  • coby gillock

Its a fact, killers start with animals. Catch and cleanse off the earth. Oh and by the way, why is it allways many who must suffer for the few?

  • Hereticmonk

Why isn’t there leash laws for cats? Seems there’s laws requiring you to control all other animals. You can’t just let your dog loose from the yard. If your snake gets out they’ll surely take it to animal control. Why are cats allowed to wander the city breeding and being a general nuisance? I love animals as much as anyone. I don’t like to see them hurt but the only thing that will stop this is if you pet owners take responsibility for your pets. Some of our citizens don’t like cats. They view them as hairy rats that need extermination. Letting your cat roam uncontrolled is irresponsible pet ownership.

    • Teri

I believe some humans are no better than rats themselves with the indiscriminate breeding of the human population….and that is not a crime?

  • Not a cat fancier

Not everybody thinks that felines are cute cuddly animals. Espicially while watching them dig in your flower beds to deficate where ever they please. Also when the cat owners do nothing to control their animals. I personally cant stand to get in my truck every morning and find paw prints all over my expensive truck. However there are a lot of us people out there with varied interest and likes and dislikes. A little tolerance goes a long way. As for the shmuck who shot the cat….. what a loser. Should be made to clean up cat and dog poo at the local animal shelter for 6 months, and pay for the vetinary bill for the cat, and made to talk with the cat owners so they can see the consequences of there callous act of cowardism.

I would like everyone to join me in a moment of meditation, and during this meditation we channel our energy into seeing that all people who have done things of this sort experience the karma they deserve, and that people stop torturing (animals, children, the elderly, etc.). Hey, its worth a shot!

  • Mark

While I feel for the animal, we live in a world where probably at least halt the people who get really emotionally upset and heartsick over animal abuse are
100 % OK and fully supportive of partial birth abortions – something I absolutely do not understand

    • Pam

Wow, we’re back over here Mark. Quite the tangent you took

  • Mark Ultima

Maybe the arrow bounced off the wall, or two, or three then hit the cat.

  • betty

THERE IS A SAYING “KEEP YOUR CAT ALIVE, KEEP IT INSIDE” I have many cats and they all live inside, the only way they gonna pass away is from old age

  • Tina Hamilton

Well to those that don’t love cats, regardless of that, NO CAT DESERVES an arrow through his head… no matter where he may have been roaming….geesh people….we don’t know that he is not inside a lot and goes out to get some wind on his face, catch a mouse and do kitty mischief…my point I guess is this: To shoot an animal with an arrow is WRONG on so many levels, whether you like cats or not, if they poo in your flower bed or not, if you think of them as little rats (I don’t see it but to each their own) or not. It is not the place to argue abortion or politics…our society is messed up, someone did this to a little ball of fur…violence is ghastly in any form. I feel for the kitty and hope the owners protect him better in the future.

  • beevus

instead of a head shot maybe a heart shot would have been better

  • Robert Stanford

does no one for one moment just stop to speculate that perhaps this was just a freak accident. They do happen you know.

    Stanford – He’s what’s for dinner.

    • Ginger Reese

It was NO accident someone shot it. I wonder how that person would feel if someone shot at him.
