Staff And Inmates Pull Boater From Water Near San Quentin

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) -- A man who was pulled from the water by San Quentin State Prison staff and inmates after his boat capsized has died.

San Quentin Lt. Sam Robinson says an officer in one of the prison's towers spotted the man and a woman in the water around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The prison's fire department, which includes inmates, noticed the man was struggling to stay afloat and pulled him from the water. Marin County Sheriff's Lt. Barry Heying says he was later pronounced dead at Marin General Hospital.

The woman was treated for exposure and released. Neither has been identified.

Heying says the pair were in a 14-foot motorboat that developed engine trouble after leaving a dock on Corte Madera Creek. The man apparently fell overboard while trying to restart the engine and then tipped the boat over.
