SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. (AP) – Searchers believe they’ve found the body of an 11-year-old New Jersey boy who went missing during a family hike in the Sequoia National Forest.

Fresno County sheriff’s officials say the family was hiking in the Yucca Flats along Highway 180 when he disappeared Friday morning.

The boy’s father told deputies he had helped his son down a steep hillside before going back to assist other family members. The father said when he turned around, his son was gone and there were slide marks leading into the waters of 10 Mile Creek.

On the fourth day of searching, authorities said Monday afternoon that they located a body believed to be the missing child about 400 feet downstream from where he disappeared.

They’re currently working to recover the body from the water.

Don’t be quick to blame~the child was 11, not 2. This is a tragedy, I can’t imagine anything worse than losing a child.

Why were they “off trail”? There are safe, well marked walking trails.

What’s wrong with these cynical, judgmental, stiff necked people? Pathetic.

Was in reply to a poster’s comment that was mean and unnecessary. It has since been deleted. Thank you for doing that.

Confused why kid slid and didn’t/couldn’t stay near edge till parent came back. 11 year olds should be able to hold onto trail…Must be more to story. Mountain lion?
    Poor family.

When this story first came on, there were a lot of people who sat here in judgment of the parents of this child. I hope you all are ashamed of yourselves. While you posted your mean spirited, hate filled comments, a family was desperately looking for their child. Those of you who are parents and found fault with the parenting skills of these people, you were able to kiss or hug your child goodnight, and their boy was dead in the river. I hope that everyone who posted such hate will think about their words, and maybe they can find it in themselves to say a prayer of peace for this family because they are going through hell right now. To the family, I pray that you find comfort with the Lord. I am so sorry for your loss. God Bless you and your family.

I agree with you Laura 100%. Your post is inspiring . You do not have to stick to trails there it is not like Yosemite. Your precious boy is in heaven, I pray for comfort for all of you also, such a tragic accident.
