Tech Companies Bucking Sacramento Downturn

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Even though the Sacramento region has some of the worst jobless numbers in the nation, the local high tech sector is booming, with many companies adding new jobs and expanding.

Mark Otero, the founder and CEO of KlickNation, a social media gaming company, says his company has expanded from 18 to 58 employees in the past year and is racing to keep up with high demand.

The midtown Sacramento company, which has released hit games like Superhero City and Age of Champions, said it is preparing to announcing a cable TV contract and launch a new social media game.

"It's absolutely crazy right now," Otero said.

Another midtown company, Cyber Electronik, launched just over a year ago with 2 employees and now has 18, according to co-founder Simon Antill.

Statistics show Sacramento lost more than 14,000 jobs in the past year, the steepest decline in the country, with a 12.7 percent unemployment rate.

"We a lot about those statistics outside the company's walls, but here it doesn't feel that way," Otero said.
