Reporting Kurtis Ming

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) –Walmart tops the list of Fortune 500 companies, bringing in the most revenue.   Our hidden camera investigation uncovered a practice that may be adding to those profits.  It has some customers and consumer advocates outraged.

You give someone a gift receipt when you’re not sure if they’ll like your gift.   It could be the wrong size, a color they don’t like or maybe they just want something else.   For many, the gift receipt takes some stress out of gift giving.  It doesn’t state how much you paid, but you give it to them so they can get the full value if they return the item.   We’ve learned that doesn’t always happen at Walmart.

”That’s totally wrong,” David Schmitz of West Sacramento said.

After changing his mind about giving a make-up kit as a gift, he tried to return it to the West Sacramento Walmart store with his gift receipt.   He says the clerk was only going to refund him half of what he paid, because the item had since gone on sale.

“I bought the item, I paid for it.  I paid $15.  I didn’t pay $7.50.”

His original receipt proves it.  After arguing a gift receipt and regular receipt should work the same, the store manager refunded him his full $15.

“But the average person isn’t going to know,” he says.

We wanted to know if David stumbled across a secret at Walmart, so we sent in an undercover producer to buy a series of items at various Sacramento area Walmart stores around Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter knowing these same items would most likely go on sale after the holidays.

The pillow and blanket we bought at the West Sacramento Walmart store for $10 before Valentine’s Day, only got us $5 back when we returned them at the same location with a gift receipt.

We only got $4.50 for pajama bottoms we bought for $9.

”That’s a little shady,” a shopper said outside the store.

We returned two St. Patrick’s Day T-shirts we bought for $8 to the Walmart store off Truxel Road in Sacramento.

We paid $8 for each of those shirts, but only received $4 back for each of them when we returned the items with a gift receipt.

After spending $13.75 on Easter items at the Walmart on El Camino Avenue in Sacramento County, we only received $7.96 back after the holiday.

Add up everything we bought, we spent a total of $51.82 with tax, but only received $26.99 back when we returned the items with gift receipts.

The various Walmart locations kept $24.83 of our money.

“It’s a rip-off,” a shopper said.

“I do think it’s stealing,” said another.

Just to make sure it wasn’t isolated to our area, our sister station in Philadelphia conducted a similar test with a gift receipt there and got the same exact results.    When the clerk wasn’t willing to refund the full price paid, the producer asked the clerk if she would know how much was spent on the gift.  The clerk responded, “No, I don’t.  I’m telling you…. when I scan this and I scan that, that is what comes up”.

Sacramento consumer attorney Stuart Tally believes this is an ingenious scam saying Walmart has got to be making hundreds of millions of dollars off this practice.

“What Walmart knows is the person who gave the gift will never tell the person who received the gift how much they paid and they know the person who returned the gift will never report to the gift giver that they returned the gift.”

We repeatedly requested an interview with Walmart’s corporate offices wanting to know why this is happening, for how long it’s been going on, and how much more money they’ve brought in using this practice.  They declined our request, issuing this brief statement.

We are committed to customer satisfaction and apologize for any inconvenience to our customers. It is our practice to refund the original price paid to the customer when returning an item with a gift receipt. We will be communicating with our store associates to reinforce our practice.  If a customer has a question regarding a gift receipt, we encourage them to speak with a member of management.      -Ashley Hardie, Manager Media Relations

So it seems Walmart is blaming its sales associates.   Remember though, our hidden cameras caught this happening not only in the Sacramento area, but across the country.

Kim Brown with the Department of Consumer Affairs says this is the first she’s heard of this type of behavior with a gift receipt.   We wanted to know if it was legal in California.

“California state law is silent on gift receipts,” Brown said.

David Schmitz hopes what happened to him, will help protect others at the nation’s largest retailer.

“I would never get a gift receipt from Walmart because it’s basically useless.”

We also randomly checked Target and Old Navy stores, and received the full value back when we returned items with gift receipts after they went on sale.  Our investigation is already getting attention at the State Capitol.    We’ll share it Friday, May 13th on the CBS13 News at 10pm.

Macy’s did the same sort of thing to me years ago. I purchased a leather coat for my daughter as a Christmas present — but the darn thing was, literally, falling apart within about six weeks. When we went to the store to exchange, they did not have her size so I asked for a refund. I was told they would refund only half of what I paid for the (defective) coat, because the coats were now on sale. I had to get nasty and demand a manager before they refunded the amount I had paid.

I had a similar experience at best buy in rancho cordova. i bought a power supply for my computer from best buy, the price was around $110.00. since it was best buys house brand, it came with a lifetime warranty, so i kept my recipt in my files. a year and a half later, the power supply failed. i took it back to best buy with the recipt. they told me since they did not carry that power supply anymore, they can only refund the last price listed which was the sale price. after complaining about the amount they wanted to give me, i had to settle on the sale price which was around $85.00. even though i had my original recipt, they would not budge on the refund.

your Walmart story is a little misleading! Not once in your story did you mention that you were buying Seasonal items, design to be utilize for the particular season coming up,ie. Valentines and St PATRICKS day and Easter. Of course the store put those items on sales at half price after the season. If the item was returned before the end of the season then they would have receive the full price. Like wise if you get a regular shirt, or vaccuum or iron and get a gift receipt you get regular price. You story is misleading. and you know it

  • Barbara Anderson

In 2009 I bought my grandson a $50.00 Gift Card from Walmart and when he tried to use it the clerk told him there was no money on the card. I bought the card in Chico, Ca. and my grandson lives in Las Vegas, Nv. I brought the gift card back to the Chico store and spoke with a store manager and was also told there was no money on the card. Of course I didn’t keep the receipt so I was out $50.00. When I purchased the card the clerk at the Register ran the card twice saying she wanted to make sure it the transaction went through. Of course there was nothing I could do without the receipt so someone, (the clerk) got a nice $50.00 from me. After seeing your news this evening, I will give the receipt along with the gift. I’m not ashamed how much I spend on a gift.
Keep up on the good work in bringing this type of “ripe-offs” to the public.

  • annie

its not a walmart policy its inproper training. there is a way to get the purchase price from the gift receipt. i would be more than happy to train those confused in the matter…

  • Wayne

Charles, I’m not sure which Walmart store you work for but you are dead wrong in your assertion of a misleading story. The author clearly states what was bought and when. Not that it matters. A consumer should receive a refund of exactly what he/she paid. The only exception is if it is clearly marketed as a seasonal only item with no refund or reduced refund after the holiday. This isn’t the case. One more example of Walmarts deceptive practices. Ranks right up there with the practice of not paying overtime accurately and locking illegals in the store after hours to do the cleaning. Curtis Thank You for looking out for this type of abuse / fraudulent behavior in our neighborhoods.

  • annie

wayne i dont know whar walmart u r talkin about i get payed good overtime…

  • Robert Lee

This was clearly done so that the story could be completed in a timely manner. This does not apply to only seasonal items in any way.

  • viper3

i live in modesto and have this very thing happen to me from both stores once i bought a bike for my nephew for x-mas 2 days after the bike had a problem they wanted to give me half price back and then it was on a gift card. the other store tried ripping me off 150 dollars .and when i went to the managers about it they said it was there policy .well i said then if you wont refund my full price i paid i will take wal-mart to small claims court .the managers changed their minds real quick. now dont get me wrong walmart does try to compete with other major retail store ie sears jcpenny’s homedepot lowes toy’s r us .its walmarts way of making money and staying the lowest store prices around.

[...] Walmart Scam I just saw this news story about Walmart scamming those who use gift receipts. I'm not a fan of this chain and do not shop there because I think they are unethical. Low prices or not, I refuse to support them, and this story is just another reason why I feel that's a just decision on my part. Anyway, what they are doing is not providing the full amount of the gift receipt. You can read the article or watch the video, which shows that this was not something just confined to my city. The gist of it is that when you give a gift and give someone the gift receipt, when they are going to Walmart to return the item, they are probably getting about half the price you actually paid. It's a nice little scam, that's for sure. Here's the link. [...]

  • BB buyer

where is the Best Buy in Rancho Cordova? I know of one in Citrus Heights, Folsom but where is it in Rancho Cordova??????

  • buyer

only if the purchase price is included in the bar-code since the purchase price is NOT printed on the gift receipt.

Annie – read and educate yourself.

  • Dee

Have to chime in on this one. The practice of reduced refunds has been going on at Walmart for many years. This does not only happen with seasonal items. If you return a product that has been placed on clearance Walmart will only refund the clearance price. This is harder to catch but all the same method. Point of the exercise? Why would they lose money on items returned after the price point division “decides” to clear out any particular product from all stores. It is a business decision and obviously has worked for 20 years that I know of. Call Bentonville and try to get someone to answer questions on this topic.

  • Losing faith quickly

Why should it matter? You pay hard earned cash for an item that they are selling regardles when its being sold. It may be seasonal but if its not marked that its a one time deal, I guess we are to assume that if we dont like it, regardless of the condition we return it, we have to take a hit.
So, what? ….. does the cost to Walmart change with the seasons? I mean really, unless the world is going to end, Easter, Valentines Day, St Patricks Day will all be back in a year. People arent asking for more than the full value back, we just want what we paid. Besides…. you know they dont throw away all the returns…. they resell it, so really, where is the loss? Im wondering if you, Charles, dont work for Walmart yourself….

  • Lola

This happened to me when I bought some Christmas lights before Christmas. I couldn’t use it because it didn’t have the connecting plug. When I went to return it after Christmas with the original receipt, the sales clerk told me I will only get the sales price for it. I argued and got a manager to override and give me a full refund. Their excuse is that people buy seasonal items on sale and try to return them for full price using prior receipts when they actually paid full price for the exact item before the seasonal holiday. They told me it was their policy. I told them there were no signs and it was not stated on their receipt as their return policy.

  • katie

    annie, you are high.

  • Veronica

Why is anyone surprised? This practice should be illegal but they figure they can get away with it since the price is not on the receipt. I’m sure Wmart has tons of lobbyists in DC making sure this criminal practice has plenty of legal loopholes.

  • Al

And the morons will still shop at the Great Wall- Of China -Mart. It’s like they like being stupid imbeciles.

  • denise

Sounds illegal – fraudulent. I hope someone sues on behalf of Walmart consumers.

  • Veronica

Your argument is on very shaky grounds. It should be illegal. They need to refund the price PAID ;what Wmart received for the transaction. Who cares if they discounted it later. The customer and/or the persons with a gift receipt are entitled to a full refund.

  • David in Toledo

I ran into this with Wal-Mart years ago. I happened to receive two poker sets from different people the same year at Christmas. I looked into returning one of them that had been purchased at Wal-Mart. But the Wal-Mart clerk told me I’d only get a fraction of what the gift-giver had paid for the merchandise because it had gone on clearance after the holiday.

At least the clerk was honest to me about it. I ended up donating the unwanted poker set as a prize at a charity tournament.

  • Dennis

Looks like someone is already looking into it. http://www.kcrlegal.com/walmart-kohls-gift-receipt-investigation.aspx

  • BAR-CODE SCAM

KEY-WORD BAR-CODE. ON the gift receipts bar-code is to match the original receipts. This is in a big way STEALING. So if this is ok then if i buy a on sale item and i returned it but it is now at regular price that means they should pay me the difference.

  • Michelle M.

They can now legally get around this by placing a “returns expiration date” on the receipt. If you don’t return it with 90 days, you are refunded the last sale price of the item(s).

  • Blake

It is not misleading at all. They said they shopped during specific holiday times when they knew the merchandise (Easter items & St Patrick’s day shirts) would soon go on sale. They disclosed this in two separate paragraphs. What is misleading about that? Go back and read it again.

  • Cat

Costco and Target refud full price paid with a receipt or gift receipt – seasonal or not. Or course, Costco does not issue gift receipts, but is very consumer friendly, even with returns.

People…. Walmart will not change their ways unless they are sued and./or we stop shopping there. If you need to watch watch you spend, cut down where you can to shop at retailers with higher integrity. The Walton family gets richer and richer at the expense of their employees and customers. No integrity.

  • Blake

That would be the solution, but people are so greedy that they think their purchase is different. The Chinese ships that Wal-Mart owns is full of cheap goods coming to the U.S., but go back to China empty. The same Americans complaining about lack of jobs are the very ones supporting China’s jobs, their imports and the export of our jobs overseas. Stop buying Chinese and they will stop importing. The larger Wal-Mart becomes, the fewer jobs we will have. You must manufacture something in order to create jobs. If you buy from China, that’s where the jobs and money will go.

  • Jenn

babies r us and toys r us do the same thing

  • jeff

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. I stopped shopping at Walmart some time ago. I just got tired of the messy aisles and the store associates that seemed to lack basic information, but mostly because I see Walmart as among the poorest examples of how to treat your employees.

Officially, I guess I boycott Walmart, and I certainly would encourage anyone else to do the same. it’s clear that no matter how many lawsuits they have, no matter how often they get called on the carpet for their behavior, they will continue to find ways to lie and cheat anyone and everyone they can.

This isn’t just something they did, it’s something they do.

  • Barry

Irrelevant. They only bought seasonal because they knew that the items were going guaranteed to go on sale. Same would have happened if they purchased any random shirt or DVD.

If a consumer purchases an item and returns it within the stores stated return policy, they should get the full purchase price refunded, regardless of whether the item is on sale or not. This is a shady, unethical, and perhaps an illegal practice.

  • William Daniel

This happens at a lot more stores than just walmart. If you buy something, and someone returns it with a GIFT RECEIPT, they get the CURRENT value of the item. If you have the original receipt, then you can have the ORIGINAL price back. I have worked in retail for over 13 years, and this makes perfect sense to me. If you want someone to have a set value as a gift, give them the real receipt or a gift card instead.

  • Barry

Costco does not issue gift receipts because all purchases are tracked by the member that purchased it. If you are returning a gift without a receipt, they are most likely going to give you the going rate for the item.

  • Sherry Franklin

Why do the associates have to do another process to pull up the purchase price for a gift receipt? How would a customer even know if the did it properly or not? When the barcode is scanned on the gift receipt the price should populate from that transaction. PERIOD!!! They are not scanning the barcode on the item, that I could see would come up as the lowest sale price. Walmart has programmed the system to pull up the sale price not the price paid.
I understand that you work for Walmart, and applaude your loyalty to your employer. Wrong is wrong, and with this issue Walmart is wrong.

  • Barry

Sorry, this was in reply to Charles, not you Blake. I agree 100% with you.

  • joanne b

This happened at Safeway. I returned stuff not used by a non profit breakfast and one of them was on sale. So they would only give the sale price even though the receipt showed the non sale price. I should have protested I will in the future. If they got the money they should returned. I think the idea of getting the regular price when you bought it on sale is good but good luck with that.

  • yan

this may not be an isolated practice – this happened to me at Mervyns several years ago. Since then Mervyns has gone out of business.

  • SF shopper

I suspected this years ago. I once return a baby shower gift at Gymboree and was surprise that how much the gift only worth and I know my friend didn’t just spent that little. For the following Christmas shopping, I asked a clerk at another store about their gift receipt return value policy, and she could not give me a clear straight answer! So from then on, I never once bother with a gift receipt! It is the company who is purposely deceiving the customers and not the clerk’s “mistake”! And for those who think it is okay, it is NOT! It is deceptive and the companies know it! If this is the what they intended then it should be stated on the receipts!

  • Ravi

We try not to shop at Walmart. We just feel depressed walking into the store. You can see that the associates are not happy, the lighting seems to be dull and in general, the stores seem disorganized. Now this will add one more to our list of reasons for not shopping at Walmart. It has just become one very unethical company.

  • Veronica

Shocking how you can justify this criminal practice. If you have a gift receipt, are you going to try to tell me that the sale price including tax isn’t coded on there? If not it should be the law. This is outrageous. I’m usually not in favor of class action lawsuits but it seems to me that this is the perfect candidate for it.

  • SGB

Who said it was over 90 days? An expiry date isn’t the issue. They do this if the item goes on sale right away. I’m surprised at how many people are defending getting ripped off. Wow

  • Mrs. Price

This has been standard practice in retail for well over 15 years.

  • AL

    charles mjohnson@

Why should it matters? You should get a full refund, as long as you don’t damage the item.

  • Peter

This is great reporting! A reporter actually went out and did investigative work on a subject that is of value to viewers/readers.

Kudos, congratulations, and keep it up!

  • the truth will set you free

You will never have your day in court. The reason why is that Wal-Mart is the largest employer in America. With the job market as bad as it is the government will do whatever Wal-Mart says or they will threaten them with layoffs. Wal-Mart is straight gangsta.

  • Blake

No problem Barry. Thanks for clarifying. I agree with you also. The larger problem is that among people who shop at Wal-Mart are also complaining about the loss (or lack) of American jobs, not realizing they are in part, a cause of the outsourcing of our manufacturing jobs. If you buy from China, that’s where the jobs and money is going.

  • Belle

Always keep your receipt when buying a gift card. The cards have to be “loaded” with the money value by the sales clerk when you buy the card (they swipe the cards through the cash register to put the money on them, so if the cash register they’re using has a defect, it could cause it not to be loaded, also). I always worry that the clerk didn’t do it correctly, so I always keep the receipt for as long as possible. Also, since the cards have magnetic strips on the back, they can get erased by being too close to anything with a magnet or even certain magnetic electrical fields. If your grandson left the card anywhere near a computer, for instance, the magnetic energy from the computer could have de-magnetized his gift card, making the value of it un-readable. So, yes, hang on to the gift card receipts, for as long as you know that card is out there.

  • lin

walmart flipped the script. many times I had purchased an item only to see it on sale later. i take my receipt to store and get the difference back. never a problem. so i guess they are beating folks to the punch. still they should notify customers up front and put it in their return policy. i always check and never shop at places that give store credits instead of refund. I try not to go in walmart if I can help it just because of the way they treat their employees. another good reason not to shop there.

  • Just Me

It has happend to me many times at various different stores…not just with the gift receipt, but with the real receipt as well. Wal-Mart is not the only one doing this. Again, shabby reporting…you should have tested other stores and venues as well.

Yes! It is criminal and we should not tolerate this! They make money off us to begin with, then they make more money off us for their inconvenience of the return. Shamefull!

  • Doug

That’s nothing. I paid about $100k to Social Security and now I’m going to be means tested out of it. Will CBS do an investigative report of the Federal government and get my money refunded?

  • will

I agree with William Daniel. A lot of stores have this policy. If you choose to return it, you are getting whatever the current selling price is. It doesnt matter whether the original price is coded on the gift receipt or now. If you are going to buy a $20 seasonal item and then return it after the season, what is the store going to do with that item? It is only worth the current selling price.

  • curious

Does it work the other way? If you buy it on sale and return it when the sale is over, do you get the current price?

  • SGB

Response to WILL. Who is talking about SEASONAL items? WHO??? Not me. I’m telling you they do this with ANY item and it’s fraud and a huge rip off. I’m all for suing them out of business. Don’t shop where the policy is to legally??? steal from consumers. BTW, are you a Walmart attorney? Why else defend this crime?

  • OBVON

They are aslo pocketing state sales tax. that is a crime against state of california.

  • SammyZ

I worked at Mervyns, all their stores have a system where it ties the Gift receipt to the original receipt… if bought with cash it can be returned as cash (with the gift receipt)… Mervyns only gives you the sale price rate when you don’t have a receipt, I think you got things a lil mixed up since they been closed for so long (not me, I worked there for like 4 years)

  • The human race is destined to fail.

Nonsense. So you believe that if someone receives a gift that they already have, or one that doesn’t fit, that they should only be allowed the sale price in exchange? Absolutely criminal. And I managed a MAJOR retail record store for a decade.

  • Stephanie Hargon

Isn’t that the purpose of the gift receipt? I know Walmart is bad about giving you next to nothing if you return an item with no receipt, but wow, so the gift receipts are worthless. It is better to give the person the original receipt, they will usually honor it as long as the 90 days hasn’t passed.

  • The human race is destined to fail.

I’m absolutely shocked by some of the comments on this article. If you return an item according to the guidelines of the store where you purchased it you should receive the price you paid for it or an equal exchange value. If you don’t they are stealing your money, plain and simple. And in case you are not aware what the store guidelines are, they MUST be printed ON the receipt (anybody ever read the novel on the back of a Best Buy receipt?). If there is nothing printed on the receipt stating that you will only get a sale price, or a new lowered price when you return it then there is absolutely NO WAY you should get anything less than the price you paid to begin with. Think about it, would you expect to get MORE money in return if the price has gone up?

  • jennifer

I work at a local walmart… there is a certain procedure to follow when doing a gift receipt transaction. For the logest time, I didn’t know what it was. We were not properly trained on it. I knew something wasn’t right about it so I looked it up in our guide book. When you use a gift receipt… the letters right above the barcode is the pricecode. If executed properly, you should receive a full refund of whatever was paid. I’ve actualy come across one where it was the opposite. We had an item on sale, customer bought it as a gift, when the reciever tried to return it, it had gone to regular price. So with the gift reciept, they got what was paid for it. No more, no less. I agree that those stores are not doing a good enough job satisfying our customers. I have customers that live closer to other store but choose to drive all the way to my store just because we are cleaner and friendlier. All of our customer service desk associates now know the proper gift reciept procedure and follow it. I’ve also heard that some store say you can only take an item back to the same store purchased at even with a reciept. Not true, except on tobacco and alcohol products.

  • Tambi

I have worked for retailers for many years and I have never heard of any of the companies I worked for doing this.I quit working for Bestbuy after seeing how they handle customers returns, warranties, and their ridiculous policies. I dont care what the price is now. The person who paid for it paid full price and that is what whoever returns it should get back. It’s disgusting. Trust me the employee’s know. It’s fraud… plain and simple!

  • Tambi

It’s true what Sammy said about the gift receipts with Mervyn’s. It wasnt any policies they had that made them go out of business. Target owned them at one time and sold them. The competition, like Kohl’s, is what led to their downfall, not to mention the economy

  • Bazerkly

Walmart did this to me. I wanted to exchange for a different size. They wanted to refund me the lesser amount and charge me the higher amount for the exchange. Walmart are CROOKS!

  • ConeyIslandBaby

There is perhaps no other company that has done more to destroy American manufacturing and the rights of the American Middle Class than Walmart. Walmart conspires with the Chinese Communist government to use slave wage labor in China to produce sub-standard goods they can sell here in the U.S. Save America – Don’t shop at Walmart!

  • Charles

Just because it seems criminal and looks criminal does not mean it is criminal. There has to be a law in the criminal code against the practise for it to be criminal.
Everybody knows the price or value of a seasonal item plunges after the season or holiday. You expect full value after the occasion has passed? Silly. Then folks would just return those things all the time and retailers would lose billions.

  • Charles

Wow, That makes your opinion all the more weighty.

  • Lynette

    Same thing happens at Macy’s.

  • Charles

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Your tinfoil hat is crooked.

  • lewis

  • cl8978

I dont think that it is COPRPORATE it has to do with the Lames that they have working there. Once a clerk took the Divider and said to me can you go get one with a UPC code on it?

  • still kicking

What a totally one sided bogus article. How about discussing what happens if the item goes UP in price, something far more likely to happen these days. Does the holder of the gift certificate get the dollar amount for the old price or the new one? And if it is the old price will Curtis suddenly claim a scam is going on and demand that the consumer be allowed to make a profit on the gift card?

  • Bazerkly

What’s wrong with the customer making a profit? That will never happen at Walmart!

  • Samuel Gray

I’ve had two other things happen at Wal-Mart with returns. On multiple occasions when I returned with my receipt, the amount that rang up for the return was different than the amount I payed for it. Each time I have taken my receipts and asked the clerks about the difference. When I was owed money they gladly rectified the situation. When Wal-mart was owed money they wouldn’t take my money, because it would have been to much trouble on their part to fix it. This leads me to believe that the receipts only identify that you purchased the product there (gift or otherwise), not what the price was when the receipt bar code is scanned.

  • Captain Target

    Shut up, Wal-Mart employee…

  • Bill

I’m probably about the only person alive who’s never seen the inside of a Walmart store. Not because I think Walmart is objectionable, its just that the
nearest one is way up in Rohnert Park, and I refuse to drive 35 miles to
see a Walmart let alone shop in one.

  • Love to Shop but not there!

I have been to Walmart to reutrn something with a receipt. I was told that I was not going to get a refund for anything because they said I stoled it. And that I made a habit of this. Both the sales associate and the night manager made those comments to me! I didn’t shop at Walmart very often, Now I don’t shop there anynore. After the fuss I made, calling the store manager & corporate and threating to let all people know what they were up to. They finally refunded my money….

  • The human race is destined to fail.

Umm, reeeeeaaally? You don’t have to pay for something you’ve already paid for, the same as you shouldn’t get less back than what you paid for it. Nobody in their right mind is going to return something and give the store MORE money because the price has gone up. lol That part of your comment makes absolutely no sense.

  • The human race is destined to fail.

As I mentioned in a previous post, no, you don’t get more back. The entire point of being given a receipt is so you and the store knows what you paid for it. Its a record of payment. That number is fixed. If you return or exchange an item that’s the amount you get. I don’t understand why this is such a hard concept for people to grasp.

  • Kevin

The article isn’t one-sided. The author requested a response from Wal-Mart, who refused to comment in full. It is very clear that Wal-Mart is refunding only half of the funds it earned on these sales. There is no defending the practice; it is deliberately anti-consumer. It is Wal-Mart’s prerogative to respond. If the corporation refuses, there is no reason the author should not publish the results of the investigation. That isn’t one-sided: that’s consumer reporting. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the concept.

  • steve

WalMark is stealing and thats the only way to figure this out anyone can explain away if it happening once but not all the time. This is a snake in the grass and really a terrible thing, when they are doing it without anyones knowledge. I would think this is stealing no holds barred, simple theft

  • The human race is destined to fail.

What are you talking about? In regards to your flippant, “Wow, That makes your opinion all the more weighty.”, I posted that information in response to someone else who had said they worked in retail for 13 years. Regardless, how could managing an honest retail business for a decade NOT make my opinion more weighty? What facts, knowledge or experience are you using to post comments like, “Then folks would just return those things all the time and retailers would lose billions.” Point in fact, you have no idea what you are talking about, so please stop. It IS common knowledge that you get what you paid for an item when you return it. That is the entire point of a receipt.

  • D Smith

This has been happening for years…I returned something to a store @ Pier 39 in SF years ago with a gift receipt and they tried to refund what the price was on that day. Why do you think all store issue gift receipt’s. It is not only Walmart. Everyone does it and it has been going on for sometime. I myself do not give gift receipt’s any more because of this.

  • steve

Not only is WalMart anti consumer but they are also against the regular businesses in the towns they come into, its the worst sort of theft along with destroying hard working people. BUT the consumer is stupid and would rather save a few dollars than to frequent a business thats an individual who has been in service by the town for many years, WalMart comes in and destroys the home town atmosphere of the place. I am not sure why people put up with it. I would not shop at Walmart, unless I have too. I would rather pay a few cents more or even a dollar more than to not shop at a friendly home town store. Yes cheap goods but the worst kind of destructive behavior, its un american, I am sure but we all put up with it

  • flameforjustice

Where did the idiot walmart employees think you got the reciept?

  • flameforjustice

I asked a deli employee to wash his hands and put on fresh gloves after he had came from somewhere in the back He refused and the deli manager was there and said NOTHING. I called corporate, they were pleasant and promised to have Store Manager call me. Store manager called me,after voicing my complaint he just praised the employee. First and last time I have went to walmart.

  • PJay

I think it’s the company trying to get away with what they can. I bought a 3 gallon water bottle there and it was something like $4 and said it included the first fill up of water. After going through the line and getting home, I saw that they had charged me for the bottle and for the water, it came to like $7 or $8. I told the store manager and he gave me some double talk and basically couldn’t explain it.

  • Bob

    You are so special, Bill.

  • Manuella Bush

Ok I will just say I shop there all the time and still will. I always pay close attention to my receipts. I have never had that happen and if they tried it with me they would hear it from me…That is stealing..Shame on you Walmart.

  • Devin Mazzeo

Having worked for Walmart in the past I can assure you that any time a customer has a complaint, legitimate or not, an associate is blamed even if they are following company policy & procedure.

  • Carol Wagner Kalaveras

It doesn’t surprise me at all. Walmart is always ripping off their own employees from their benefits and pay. Now they’re trying to blame their employees for shorting the customer. I am sure there is no way the sales associate is responsible. How many times does a manager have to come over to authorize a void or some other transaction for the sales person because they have no authority to process such transactions. And managers are following Company policy.

  • kyle

I can’t believe the people who are defending Walmart here… it’s mind blowing.

For you sheep, let me summarize the key points:
    1. According to the article, Walmart STATES that this should not be going on. Full purchase price should be refunded if you use a gift receipt. Then they go on, implying that it’s the fault of the associate. First of all, I don’t believe this for a second… they scan the item then the computer tells them how much to return. But if it IS true then this is outright THEFT by the employees and should addressed by Walmart corporate more agressively than “reinforce the practice”.

    2. I have a feeling that if you return the items using a regular receipt you will get the full paid price back. If this is true and if it’s true that you only get the sale price when using a gift receipt, then this is outright THEFT by Walmart. I don’t see how anybody can dispute this.

[...] Call Kurtis Investigation: Walmart Caught Shortchanging Customers Using Gift Receipts [worldnow id=5846469 width=385 height=288 type=video] [...]

  • Bird

Several years ago I purchased an item at a Wal-Mart in the Sacramento area and then went home which is in the mountains. I ended up needing to return the item so I went to the one closest to me which was in Carson City. That particular Wal-Mart did not sell that item at their store so they said I could not return it at all even though I had a receipt. I made a big deal out of it and the manager did end up giving me a refund.

You also have to watch and make sure they are giving you the clearance items their prices. I once bought a pair of slacks on clearance for $3.00. The register rung it up as $18. But the original price on the tag was $17. It was a big mess and I felt like they were trying to rip me off. The manager was very irritated with me. I didn’t do anything wrong. So since the price rung up higher than the actual price it was suppose to be I got a $3.00 credit which means I got the slacks for free.

So don’t forget that if an item rings up higher than the price is suppose to be you are suppose to get a $3 credit on your purchase or if the item is $3 or less you get it for free. It says it right there on the tray where the debt machine is. I have gotten several items discounted because of this policy. So watch as they ring up your items.

I’ve had the same thing happen at Macy’s. Lesson is buyer beware.

I work at Wal-mart. I hold a BA in English and history and a BS in Secondary Education. Teaching jobs have been hard to come by during the recession so I’m still at my part-time ‘while I’m in college’ job. Many of my fellow associates are current college students. There are also associates in management with multiple degrees as well. Oh, and my IQ is in the 120′s. Now *smug* tell me again how all Wal-mart associates are “Lames”. Next time try to use those few brain cells of yours to do something OTHER than make useless stereotype claims.

  • rachel

Without knowing what the cameras and store-to-store communication was regarding this return, it is impossible to draw a factually-based conclusion. As for where the employees thought ‘love to shop…’ got the receipt – from the trash can, from the parking lot, from the same items already returned without a receipt and this is take two, from friends etc. It happens. The s**t people pull to try to scam is just unreal. If they’d put as much effort into actually WORKING for their money instead of stealing, this country would be a much better place. This is especially true since WE are stuck paying for their scheming.

  • rachel

the back is a work/prep area. If he was restocking product or making food there would be no reason to change his gloves. Should he have done it anyway even though that’s wasteful if his gloves were still sanitary – yes to please your germaphobic ways.

  • Anomis

I’ve had the same thing happen to me at Christmas 2010 when I tried to return Christmas items, they would only give me half the price. I ended up keeping the stuff but I never heard of that kind of practice before. So Im really glad this story was done and I hope things change. And as far as Rachel the walmart employee and all her iq’s and degrees, WHATEVER!!! Who cares of all your education if you don’t have any common sense?

  • JJC

across the street from elephant bar and griil in the back of the stores. You are right, it is citrus hights, my mistake.

  • Kathy Bollerud Markovich

this has happened to me at Walmart and many other stores including Meijer. They have told me that if an item is on sale, it doesnt matter what youve paid fer it..that they will only refund the amount the store has listed as the price at the time you try to return it. Ive argued this point with them over and over..and have never been on the winning side of this battle. Long story short..I dont shop much at the chain stores like walmart and meijer…Ill buy my items at credible places that operate with \fair business tactics.

  • Kathy Bollerud Markovich

but do you have to actually pay for the item, then take it to customer service for the refunds? ive had many items scan wrong, and if I bring it to the cashiers attention, she changes it..but Ive never gotten a credit for it..unless I keep my mouth shut, pay for it, then take it to customer service.

  • elron hoover

This is exactly why I don’t feel bad about taking back my $100 sonic care toothbrush once a year and exchanging it for a new one, since they do it without a receipt every time.

  • Danielle

Wow. It looks like a position at Wal-Mart is the best job you will be occupying for a very long time. I certainly don’t see ‘management’ in your future.

  • annie

say wut u want Danielle it wont bother me at all. its a job and these days everyone should be thankful for wut they have.

  • annie

im not gonna waste my time argueing with u. everyone has their views on what has previously gone down. i can just say from experience its actually a pretty good company to work for.

  • Rae

I really do not understand why anyone would shop at WalMart. They are the biggest crroks in the retail industry.

  • Bob the Builder

    LOL

  • Crownline

It’s irrellevent whether it’s on sale or not. What matters is the original purchase price. Apparently the Gift Receipts don’t show the original purchase price, just current price. This is no accident of Walmart, this is intentional and they are delaying any comments until they discuss it with their team of corporate lawyer and California lawyers. They will lose this battle and policy will change. They gambled and made millions, but have now been caught and will come clean. Boycott Walmart.

  • B

Burlington Coat Factory in Modesto CA does the same thing. They say that you get the lost selling price even if you have a gift receipt. I think this only happens in certain stores where mostly minorities and people on low incomes shop. They think that we are not going to care just as long as we get something and that we won’t go above the managers head. I did that at Burlington Coat Factory and customer service said they couldn’t help either. I just don’t shop their anymore and let everyone know that the store is shady.

  • Howard Ainsworth

Easy way tom solve this problem. Just send an actual receipt with an item you think might be returned, or better yet send them a gift card and they canuse it to get what they want at the post holiday sales.

  • Donna

I have attempted to return an item with a gift receipt because I wasn’t able to produce my orginal receipt. When I was told that I would be given the price in the computer I refused to accept their price knowing that it was wrong. I did find my orginal receipt within 24 hours and I returned back to the store with the item, the gift receipt, and the orginal receipt. The same statement was told to me about the present computer price and Wal-Mart wouldn’t give me the price that I paid on the receipt. I said that I wouldn’t accept that price and again I picked up my item and walked out of the store. I later gave the item to charity.

  • JCooks

I agree…we need to boycott Walmart. They dont deserve our business. This was stealing. Pass the word along…I know I will.

  • JCooks

It does happen all the time and I can understand what Will is saying but its misleading. Why give us a gift reciept then without telling us what it really means. You can bring it in without a reciept and get the same amount back. Whats the point. Just disclose it. Let us know that your giving us this reciept and it really doesnt mean a thing…

  • SactoIsRaleys

One more reason to not shop at Walmart. One more reason to shop at RALEY’S instead for your groceries and personal care items.

  • Kelly Florida

Kohl’s does the very same thing…

I had the exact same makeup kit that was shown by the man in the story. My daughter and I were each given one and since they were so large we could not possibly use that much make-up. I tried to return one because I had seen them on sale and knew they had a fair value. I asked the person who gave it to us where it was purchased. They said Walmart. However, we had no receipt. I have exerienced their “policy” in the past and have come to feel that is all I am entitled to because I had no receipt. I was offered 2.50 for the same make-up kit since I had no receipt and their merchandise is drastically reduced after Christmas. I am thinking this works to many Corprate advantage because lots of people returning things have no idea how much you paid for something. Though it is regarded as “improper”, I pack the real receipt with the gift and bring it to the attention of the receiver so that they can get full refunds in that same situation.

On that day, I was outraged just as the person in your story and in fact I was offered less than half of what he was offered. I refused to return mine at that price. We donated the make-up to various charities because that is something those individuals would need and Walmart will not be the profiteer of that practice.
I am still feeling angry about their practice and that happened in January.
Thank you for having stories that recognize the frustrations of consumers.
    Sincerely,
    Frustrated Consumer and Gift Receiver

  • Denise Richardson

Good job, Dave – good job!!

  • Patti

WAIT a minute! This isn’t exclusive to WalMart!!! Try returning things to Kohl’s, Target or JCPenney! If the item has been marked down in price or currently on “sale” that’s all you get. Bashing Walmart seems to be the “in” thing now.

  • J

My husband works for them. They haven’t been so good to HIM…they don’t try very hard to conceal the fact that their employees are disposable. With the job market the way it is, they could replace every person on their floor in a week, and they know it. And from HIS experience, it shows.

Almost every store with gift receipts does this…. the receipts are pointless it just links to the sku and gives a purchase date…. instead of to the original receipt and item price. Target, Avenue. They ALL do it. Not just walmart
