New Cuts May Axe 100 More Sac PD Officers

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Law enforcement officials asked city leaders to avoid further cuts to public safety as part of a proposed solution to the approaching $40 million city deficit.

Sacramento Police Chief Rick Braziel said the proposal to cut 98 officers and 69 staff members would decimate some of his most critical units, including the gang, narcotics and parole intervention teams.

The plan would cut $12 million from the upcoming fiscal budget. Last year's budget cut $6.9 million from Sacramento PD, the fiscal 2010 year budget lopped off $6 million, and the 2009 budget cut $10 million.

The Sacramento Fire Department may also face serious layoffs: 49 pink slips would have to be issued for next year's budget.

City council members will have to make a final decision on layoffs by the end of June.
