RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) — A Rancho Cordova man is now back home after being locked up in a case of mistaken identity.

Linell Tillman is only now getting his personal belongings back from his car that is still stuck in an impound lot after a traffic stop that left Tillman in jail two weeks ago, because his ID matched closely to a man with a felony warrant.

“The name was Furrell, and my name is Linell,” says Tillman.

This is a case of mistaken identity; the same description, social security number and a date of birth that was off by one day.

“I explained to the officers about the names, that it wasn’t my warrant, and I asked what name was it and he said it must have been an alias,” explained Tillman.

Meanwhile, Tillman was pulled over for expired tags and did not have photo ID, proof of insurance or valid registration.

But, Rancho Cordova Police Chief Doug Diamond says his officer made the right call.

“So, there’s just too much to say no it’s not the same guy, so we went ahead and took him downtown,” said Chief Diamond.

Tillman was locked up for a total of six hours, but police finally figured out that he was not their criminal, and had fingerprints to prove it.

Police say that Tillman may have been the victim of identity theft, which is why his social security number exactly matched their suspects.

I’d go to ss and get a new #!

  • Wayne

It’s understandable how this mistake could happen. I thought the police had computers in the squad cars. The two must have looked alike too. Now the police need to do the right thing and waive his impound fees. Ticket him for the violations but waive the auto impound fees.

  • Ryan

    Wayne I agree.

  • ryan

only problem wayne is that he had no reg, no ins and no reg so they could have impounded anyways. make him pay.

  • John

They impounded because of the arrest for a (mistaken0 warrant not for no insurance or expired registration. He can get his car out at no charge. If he had other qualifying photo ID with him at the time, he would have been released at the scene.

  • Bogdonjuan

Why would they “waive” his impound fees?? The vehicle would have been towed anyway due to failure to provide proof of insurance. They don’t just give you a ticket and allow you to continue to drive around with no insurance.

  • Derek

No license, insurance or registration. This guy is a jerk anyway. Who cares if he went to jail for 6 hours.

  • Wayne

Derek, you don’t take away someones freedom for being a jerk. Opinions like yours are why more and more civil liberties are taken away from people year after year. When the stormtroopers kick down your door, shoot your dog, scare your children and haul your ass off to to the gulag for playing your radio to loud you may feel differently.

  • Derek

If you knew what your were talking about, you would realize that my opinion IS a civil liberty. You’re a drama queen. People get arrested for peeing in public even when there are no women or children around. That’s just being a jerk. You could call it a public health issue, but they don’t arrest smokers, which is more dangerous than peeing on someones bushes in the middle of the night. What about public nuisance? That’s nothing more than being a jerk, and people get arrested for that. This guy was committing 3 separate crimes at the same time, and got arrested because he didn’t carry any actual id. They let him go once they sorted it out. Feel sorry for him if you want to, but I don’t. Comparing it to kicking down a door a murdering animals is just stupid, and telling my my opinion is dangerous is just silly. Don’t be such a sissy.

Tillman was pulled over for expired tags and did not have photo ID, proof of insurance or valid registration. That right there is a huge red flag. If you don’t want the police pulling you over, maybe you should have been taking care of your business, obviously he was not so he was justly pulled over and should have been, more importantly, he should never have been driving with all of those infractions, knowing full well that it would be just a matter of time before he would get caught up. Then we wonder why there is racial profiling, Black people get it together please, so that the rest of us who do take care of our business, don’t have to get looked at like we are all idiots!

  • Wayne

Derek, we all know the police do nothing wrong. Why don’t you tell the wife in the attached article that she is just a sissy.

Kicker, the officers were from our CHURCH!!! LOL

  • blah

I truly agree, if the guy take care of his business this should not happen to him. But any wayI think the cop do the right thing too. cuz the guy driving without any proof. People lie too..trying to get away when they get pull over.
