Sac State Student Pleads Not Guilty In Roommate's Death

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A former California State University, Sacramento student accused of beating his roommate to death has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Quran Jones entered the plea on Friday. A judge set his trial date for Sept. 19.

Jones is charged with one count of murder in the death of 23-year-old Scott Hawkins.

Authorities say Jones beat Hawkins with a baseball bat during a rampage on Oct. 21, 2009.

He then allegedly stabbed himself with a knife. Campus police say officers who arrived at the dormitory shot Jones three times when he came at them with the knife.

He was arrested after being treated at the University of California, Davis Medical Center.
