Birthday Party Ends In Murder-Suicide

View Comments

NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. (CBS13) – A woman was apparently shot and killed at her child’s birthday party by her brother, who then took his own life, authorities said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said the brother and sister were in the midst of a heated argument and walked into the garage of her residence on the 5800 block of San Ardo Way just before 6:00 p.m.

The man shot the woman, identified by neighbors as Delores Tornel, and then walked back inside the home and brandished the handgun.

Family members fled the home, and the man returned to the garage, where he took his own life, authorities said.

The subject of their argument is not known. Family members had apparently gathered at the home for a birthday party for Delores’ 12-year-old son when the fatal incident took place.

Detectives are treating the case as an apparent murder-suicide.

    Very sad day for the boy, especially it happened to be on his b-day he’ll never be right again.

    speak for yourself.

  • Ja Nell Harris

    How sad what a way for that 12 year old to remember any future birthdays.

  • Again and Again

    These women keep going back to these people who abuse them WHY
    Whether it be a brother husband boyfriend they will always abuse or kill you
    I will never understand women who go back to this beating and killings
    Now the kids keep suffering

    • Jason

      It wasnt like that between them. He just recently moved in with her and she just recently got the 2 younger boys back from their dad. It wasn’t a case of abuse he just snapped for whatever reason. People make their own assumptions when they dont know all the details. I knew Delores and this whole situation was tragic and senseless

    It is ok to help out a family member, but if the family member is a loser,doper thief………. better to leave the loser out of your life.

    Too bad they lived in North Highlands. Could have had different fate if they lived elsewhere.

    • Jackie Berry

      What difference would that have made. She was having a party where ever she lived! You’re an IDIOT.

    • KBright

      Jackie,,

      Please fill us in on her life..

      Where did she GRADUATE high school? Did she make a good choice of life partners? Why did she loose the kids in the first place? Whe did she get them back from the biological father? Was she married? Are all the kids from the same dad? Please elaborate on her life so we know.

      • kanakasue

        So you know what? Your own twist on how to blame this tragedy? Leave the woman’s identity alone so that her son can move on. You want Jerry Springer and National Inquiry news. Stop the sensationalism.

  • Jackie Berry

    If you didnt KNOW HER….Do NOT COMMENT!

  • Corrinne

    What a sad situation. My heart goes out her son. So senseless and tragic.

  • ALex75

    Kbright- Did YOU graduate? It is lose, not loose dumb ass. So because of where she lived, may or may not had been married is why she got killed by her brother? WOW, you are a pathetic person that personally makes me nauseaus.

  • kimberly

    she really was nice. i used to work with her.. she was a great mom… and no that would not be the reason.. from what i can remember she always tried to help her brother …..

  • Cheri Romero

    I agree. I KNEW Dolores and she was a great woman. Never- the-hell mind what her family situation was with her kids. She was my friend and was like a daughter to me. RIP my sweet girl. My God this sucks!!

    • Cheri Romero

      There is a candlelight vigil at her house tonight at 7pm for those of you who loved her.

  • Holly

    Delores was not “poorish or ghetto”. I worked with her for over 5 years, she worked there longer than I have. She had a great job, was a very hard worker & great mom. She chose to help out her brother because she was such a compassionate person that loved her family. The fact that some people judge her for what her brother did is very childish & just plain horrible. Keep in mind that she left behind 3 children that will forever be scarred by this tragedy. Where they lived did not matter, people are murdered in the nicest of neighborhoods too.

    There is a season for everything,
    A time for every occupation under heaven;
    A time for giving birth, a time for dying;
    A time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted.
    A time for killing, a time for healing;
    A time for tears a time for laughter;
    A time for mourning, a time for dancing.
    A time for throwing stones away, a time for gathering them up;
    A time for embracing, as time to refrain from embracing
    A time for searching, a time for losing;
    A time for keeping, a time for throwing away.
    A time for reaping, a time for sowing;
    A time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.
    As time for loving, a time for hating,
    A time for war, a time for peace.

    i met her thru comcast she was a wonderful person… this woman life was taken from her and her children ppl need to stop with this foolishness talk…

  • Sdupl

    I knew the family very well. SHe was a kind loving mother of 3 boys. She was educated and a hard worker. She was driven by life and happiness. She knew JESUS and gave her life to the Lord before her brother took her life

  • kendra green

    it didn’t matter where someone lived, it could happen anywhere. i feel for the family from the brothers and sisters of the victim’s to the parents, but especially my heart goes out to those boys, i hope they are able to get into some grief counseling. Even though it won’t bring back there mama, they need some therapy, no child should have to loose a parent like that, and to witness it…….man, i can’t even imagine what they are going through.

  • Jackie Berry

    My daughter goes to school with Delores’ son and I have to say when I heard what happened I was shocked I mean, this really hits close to home. My child is having to console another child because of a senseless act which took away his mother. My prayers are with all friends and family during this difficult time.
