Plan To Remove Racial Slur From Headstones Gets Approval

EL DORADO COUNTY(CBS13) – A racial slur etched on 36 tombstones will finally be removed after more than 50 years.

After months of controversy, the El Dorado Countysupervisors voted today to replace the headstones that are marked with the N-word.  The work will be done by prisoners under the guidance of the Cal Prison Industry Authority.

The Army Corps of Engineers admits someone made a degrading mistake in the 1950's when the graves were moved Negro Hill to the Mormon Island Relocation Cemeteryto make way for Folsom Dam.

"This is a great example of using inmates to perform community service, parks deferred maintenance, things there isn't a lot of money for right now," said Eric Reslock of the Cal Prison Industry Authority.

The price for the work is estimated to be $23,000.
