CHP Plans Three-Pronged Crackdown For Holiday Weekend

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Don’t text behind the wheel, don’t drive drunk, and buckle up – consider yourself warned this holiday weekend, by the California Highway Patrol.

The law enforcement agency planned to work around the clock to enforce the safety campaign on roadways around the Bay Area and the entire state. There was going to be a zero tolerance policy for safety violations, and the CHP warned that it could be a costly experience if pulled over, too – anywhere from $142 to more than $1,000 depending on the citation.

“We’ve reached, in California, a 96% usage rate for seat belts,” declared Chris Cochran with the state Office of Traffic Safety. “Which sounds pretty good and actually is pretty good but because California is so big that still means there are over 1 million people out there who are not regularly buckling up.”

He added that the number of people texting while driving was dangerously high – an estimated 10% of drivers.

He was convinced that zero tolerance campaigns have paid off in the past, and he had the evidence to prove it.

“We’ve been seeing the number of DUI crashes and fatalities going down for the last 5 years.”

Thank goodness the government is there to keep us safe from ourselves with seatbelt laws! I don’t know HOW we would survive with out them!

    • Wyliecoyote

A gal flew into on coming traffic last week on HYW 80 because she…..did not have her seatbelt on. CHP deals with stupidity and carnage daily. Someone might shoot them when they approach the vehicle(Generally a felon on the run), common sense apparently is not that common. So we have to make stupidity laws for folks that stupid so people do not fly into on coming traffic and cause a traffic jam for 15 miles and close the freeway down.

    • Dave

      Some don’t

    • dave

I hope they have this in Spanish, As that is the bigger problem area.

  • sam

    you are so crazzy stupid

    • Big Ruffus

Sam…shut up, no one said you could talk, this is the Big Boys table you moron!!!

  • Jo Diggs

Stupid cops, go find some REAL criminals to harass!

    • Wyliecoyote

When a drunk or some texting kid kills your family member, you might have a VERY different opinion. They are REAL criminals and kill thousands of innocent people every year by breaking the law.

    • Dave

People who kill prople while driving DRUNK are criminals.

      • dave

Keep in mind..An illegal Alien kills an American every 24 seconds!

  • sam

i just answer to your question and i see you do not like my answer
    Thank you for reply

  • jim

you are a moron if you text while driving, drive drunk or don’t wear a seatbelt ….

  • Bill

Way to go, but it should be done 24/7/52. If this was done everyday and more speeders were stopped and ticketed. With that revenue the State could put more Officers on the streets and write more tickets and bring in more revenue. This action would put a BIG dent in the Budget debt. On my last trip to the Drs office (10 mins away) I counted 63 drivers on cell phones. At $143.00 a ticket that would bring in $9009.00 10 mintues. WOW There goes the State money problems. Without cuts to our Schools and Law enforcement agencies. LOL

    • Tom

I agree with you Bill I see more than half the people on the way home on the phone driving like drunk fools every day looking straight in there phone not even paying attintion to whats going on in front of them this is kids and more adults than kids .Also the nicer the car the more they break the law when you honk at them when they almost side swipe they flip you off and look at you like hey dummy look out for me i’m rich . The richer they are the dummer they are when it comes to safety

  • unionthug

    Attica! Attica! Attica!

    • Bill

If that’s what it takes to keep my children and grandchildren safe And from being kill by some moron who can’t pull over or wait to answer thier call or text. Then “SO BE IT.” Praise God and all of the Law Enforcement Man and Women. With which some of us would not be here!!!!!!

  • Joe

I was in a truck when it rolled several times without a seatbelt on…guess it wasn’t my time. A naive teenager who had to learn the hard way…have worn it every day since for the past 20 years!!

  • Charles

On the news the other night the law was working a street to make it safe but the video showed the motorcycle cop hiding. How is hiding making it safer? Hiding catches speeders etc but does not make it safe. Making themselves seen makes it safer because people will behave. It’s all about revenue, not safety. They’re not fooling us.

  • Tom

    GOOOOOOO!!!!!!! CHP

  • camore

It doesn’t matter how much they warn people or how many cops are out. People still talk on their phones, drive drunk, speed and don’t wear seat belts. Warnings can only go so far. I don’t care if people kill themselves while breaking the law, but some innocent person is usually the victim.Every time I am out, whether walking or driving, I see drivers on phones and speeding. The news after the holiday is going to once again report that several lives have been lost. People never learn.

    • Bill

The problem with drunk drivers cauxeing a wreack is that they very seldom get hurt themsleves. But, the people in the other cars are usually killed. Smart going drunk driver. So I say Go go CHP and all other law enforcement officers.

  • dan

If the government had their way…..we would have to look into the law books to see what we are allowed to do.
Everything would be illegal, except what is written to be legal.
