Off-Duty Deputy Shoots Suspect During Pursuit

ROSEVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) – An off-duty sheriff's deputy shot a fleeing suspect in a quiet neighborhood Sunday afternoon, seriously wounding the man, authorities said.

The Roseville Police Department said the suspect, who has not been identified, grabbed lottery tickets from a Rocklin AM/PM convenience store when the clerk had her back turned and ran off.

The clerk said the man didn't brandish a gun but did exhibit strange behavior.

"He was digging around in his pants, kind of," said Kelsey Bauwens.

Police tracked down the suspect and chased him to Roseville, where he allegedly bailed out of a stolen Honda Civic and ran through a series of residential backyards on foot.

Investigators said an off-duty Placer County Sheriff's deputy caught up with the suspect in Cambria Park and opened fire.

"Shots were fired and the suspect received life-threatening injuries," said Roseville Police Lt. Michael Doane.

Dr. Randy Ow, who witnessed the shooting and helped treat the wounded suspect, said he didn't see the suspect display any weapons from his vantage point.

"I could tell that he got shot in the lower back," Dr. Ow said. "I think the sheriff… he would have lost him over the wall."

Authorities have not released the name of the suspect and did not say whether the man was armed.
