Senate Passes Bill Allowing Same-Day Registration

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Californians would be able to register and vote on the same day at county election offices under a bill passed by the state Senate.

Lawmakers passed SB641 by Democratic Sen. Ron Calderon of Monterey Park. The bill would allow eligible citizens to register and vote on election day at county election offices, but not at polling places.

Calderon says the bill would help increase voter turnout and is supported by various voter-advocate groups. He says California ranks 41st in the nation in voter turnout.

Republican Sen. Doug LaMalfa of Willows opposed the proposal because he says people already have plenty of time to register. Currently, voters can register up to 15 days before an election.

The bill passed 21-14 and moves to the Assembly.
