Dam Release Prompts Warning Along Lower American River

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Officials are warning boaters and swimmers about the dangers of water levels that continue to rise on the lower American River.

With the snow melt in the high country, the federal bureau of reclamation is releasing higher amounts of water from the Folsom Dam into the lower American River.

On Tuesday releases were increased to 9,000 cubit feet per second. Starting today, the released could increase to 10,000 feet per second or higher, which could cause some low-lying areas of Discovery Park, Campus Commons, and segments of the American River Parkway bike trail to flood.

Visitors in or along the lower American River downstream of Nimbus Dam to the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers are urged by officials to take safety precautions.
