Subway Worker Forced Into Freezer By Robber

STOCKTON, Calif. (CBS13) – A worker was trapped for 20 minutes in a freezer after an armed robber forced her in there during a bold Wednesday morning crime.

Vin Tiwana, the owner of the Subway restaurant, said the victim was opening the store by herself when an armed man demanded cash from the register and assaulted her, trying to open the locked safe.

The suspect shoved her into the back room and trapped her inside the freezer by blocking the door with a heavy rack.

"Imagine yourself in a cold place, not knowing when the next person is coming in, early in the morning like that," Tiwana said.

It took at least 20 minutes for a coworker to arrive and hear the woman's cries for help. The freezer doesn't have any sort of ventilation, and authorities said the woman could have died if she hadn't been rescued so soon.

The crime stunned employees, who called the robber's actions particularly egregious and cruel.

"Not only did you take something that didn't belong to you, you locked her in the freezer? She's half my size, it's cold in there," said Mallissa Broderick.

The suspect stole the woman's car during the robbery, but investigators located it within hours and arrested him.
