Adult Day Care Center Closes Its Doors Due To Budget Cuts

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) --

A health center that seniors and adults with disabilities rely on has closed its doors permanently due to budget cuts.

Today is goodbye at the Robertson Center, and while some may not realize it, it is written on the faces of the employees and families.

"This day is the closure to a great journey that my mom has had here," says Lisa Daggs.

Lisa Daggs brought her mother, Ilene, to the Robertson Adult Day Center for more than two years, after two strokes.

"It's sad because we've learned have a nice friend here," says Daggs.

But the days of fun and rehab have come to an end, and after 25 years the Robertson Center is closing its doors, citing a lack of state funds.

"It's been underfunded for many years and the owner had been contributing his own dollars out of pocket," said Lydia Missaelides, California Association for Adult Day Services.

And this will likely not be the last adult day care center to close its doors. The Association for Adult Day Care expects at least half to close due to budget cuts.

"There's no way that these centers can continue to do the same work they do today for the same people with half the money.  Its simple math," explained Missaelides.

So now the question to these people is after the hugs: Where do they go tomorrow?
