Greyhound Station Finally Moving From K Street Mall

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) --- A decades-long eyesore could be about to disappear from downtown Sacramento. City leaders are anxious to shut down the Greyhound bus station near K Street Mall.

The lease sign is finally up. After years of talk, it appears that Greyhound really will be making its last stop at this station on the corner of 7th and l. But not everyone is so sure.

"We're waiting to see when they're moving, that's all," said Alex Taher who works across from the Greyhound station.

Alex works at the convenience store across the street and has heard the talk before. Back in January 2008 Mayor Heather Fargo said it would happen. Three and a half years later, Greyhound is still here. This time, a new station is finally ready on Richards Boulevard. The sign there says open in 2012, but the city now says it will be ready next month. Greyhound employees say the bus company has agreed to move in immediately, leaving 7th and I empty.

It's supposed to be a major step towards cleaning up downtown.

"Not only just moving greyhound, I think it's a great location for the city…over on Richards Boulevard, but its not gonna make a difference as far as cleaning up downtown," said Willie Woods a Sacramento resident.

Along with the seedy hotels Greyound has been blamed for bringing crime to K Street Mall and the surrounding downtown neighborhood. Last month police responded to 48 calls for service at the station -- nearly twice as many as at the Amtrak station five blocks away.

It's been years in the making, but this is one Greyhound move with a lot riding on it.
