Two Drown In Yuba County Kayaking Accident

MARYSVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) – A Plumas Lake resident and his stepson died Sunday morning after going over a dam on the Yuba River, authorities said.

The Yuba County Sheriff's Department said a group of five kayakers began traveling on the Yuba River at around 11:00 a.m. when 17-year-old Tyler Minton was pulled over the Daguerre Point Dam, a 24-foot-tall low-head dam.

Minton's stepfather, identified as 43-year-old Lee Mattice III, waded into the water to attempt to pull the teen to safety but was also pulled over the edge of the dam by the fast-moving current.

Two fishermen were able to pull Mattice out of the water, but efforts by emergency responders to revive him were unsuccessful, authorities said.

A Sheriff's Department boat patrol found Minton downriver and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have warned of potentially dangerous conditions in rivers across the valley due to the melting Sierra snowpack.
