Helicopter Makes Hard Landing, Sparks Grassfire In Sacramento County

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) – Fire fighters are working a blaze in a remote area of Sacramento County after a helicopter made a hard landing in a field sparking the fire, according to authorities.

The fire began around 1:00pm in a field about three miles east of Franklin Field Airport.  A pilot was practicing autorotations which is when a pilot hovers, cuts the engine and brings the helicopter to the ground. 

However, the pilot came down too hard and the helicopter rolled over sparking a fire.  The pilot was not hurt.

The fire, which is burning off southbound Highway 99 near Dillard and Twin Cities Road, has burned about six acres so far.  Consumnes River fire fighters are having a difficult time reaching the fire by foot and are using helicopters to drop water.
