Historic Sacramento Clock To Be Repaired After 14 Years

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - An historic clock that stopped ticking in downtown Sacramento 14 years ago should keep perfect time by the end of summer.

The clock which stood on top of a 15-foot pole has been in downtown Sacramento for nearly a century.  The Sacramento Department of Transportation hauled away the timepiece from 10th and J streets this morning.

The Art Foundry and Gallery will work on the early 20th century clock and get it working again.

"Mr. Mayes donated it (the clock) to the city in 1993, then he closed his business in 1998.  And so shortly after that it started to deteriorate because no on was sure who was responsible for it at that point," said Sacramento History Foundation Executive Director Greig Best.

The project will cost $24,000 and is being paid for by a historical grant and redevelopment money.
