Man With Assault Rifle Killed In Officer Involved Shooting

View Comments

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Deputies shot and killed a man who allegedly opened fire at law enforcement with an assault rifle Sunday night in the Arden-Arcade area.

A Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a disturbance call near Whitney Avenue and Morrow Street at about 9:30 p.m. and was confronted by a man who was brandishing an assault rifle.

The suspect allegedly opened fire, forcing the deputy to retreat and call for backup, authorities said.

A second deputy arrived on scene a short time later and was also fired upon by the suspect. Both deputies returned fire, fatally wounding the alleged gunman.

Neither deputy was seriously hurt in the exchange.

A motive for the incident and the identity of the suspect have not been released.

  • There goes the neighborhood

Yeah I live around the corner, there are idiots running around
24/7 doing who know what? maybe they are baking cookies
or going to bible class!? Suprised there arent more shootings! on new years
the neighborhood sounds like a war zone! and you want proof?
just walk down the street tonight and ask them to show you their goods!

  • DrewD

“Alleged gunman”. Why do I laugh when I read this. The dude had the rifle in his hands…shooting at officers…little beyond “alleged” at that point i’am thinking…but what do I know?

  • jeff

this happened right by my house! couldnt tell if it was gunshots or not with all the fireworks going off. whole lot of sirens and a heli came out not too long after it

  • me

the man killed was my dad. A little respect please…no one knew him like I did. How dare anyone judge or speak about what and who they dont know. RIP daddy

    • respectVictimsRights

Sorry, but your daddy is not the victim. He tried to kill people. Fortunately he was stopped before he murdered any innocent people.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you have no remorse for what your daddy tried to do. You are well on your way to following in your daddy’s footsteps.

    • nocrybabies

Me, nice try, your dad just got shot and you are on the internet making comments………yeah right…………..

    • play13

Sucks to be you…..If this is true and it was your dad, he got what he deserved…It could have been a innocent bystander or the cops themselves that could have been killed or injured by this man…

  • I am skeptical

If he was your daddy, hopefully you learn from his mistake…. never point a gun at a cop unless you expect or want to be shot.
And for somebody who should be mourning the passing of a parent I find it rather odd that you’re on the computer posting comments about a newspaper article.

P.S. was it an assault rifle or just a regular rifle that the media is labelling as an evil baby killing machine gun?

    • Fred

Television reports last night said he was carrying a handgin when he was shot. Get the story straight. CBS always wants to sensationalize everything

  • Lancelot Du Lak

Well, me, no matter what we think or don’t know, shooting at police officers is never a good way to remain healthy.

  • me2

I think the problem the commenters have is the fact your father opened fire on a public street obviously with no regard to who a stray bullet may have hit. It is irrelevant that no one knew him like you did. His bullets told us all we needed to know about the man.

  • Matt

    Good riddance.
One less mouth to feed in prison.

  • one who was there

You people who make comments without having all the facts are ghouls. There are family and neighbors who are in great distress right now and don’t need your snarky opinions. Me was trying to find out what happened as they could not enter the area and came upon your half-assed and thoughtless comments instead. Get a life of your own instead of vicariously trying to inject your hate into the world.

  • I am skeptical

Our “hate” doesn’t involve shooting at people…. I guess this means we get to keep our lives intact and moving forward.

I agree with Matt… Even if the officers had used every bullet in their inventory the cost to replace wouldn’t be a blip on the map compared to the cost to house, feed and care for these Idiots…. Goodbye Daddy.

  • nomowelfare

One more loser off the streets, that the taxpayers don’t have to support.
Thank God that no Officers or law abiding citizens were hurt.
Let’s see what’s next ……..a car wash to pay for the losers funeral…….

  • LD

A gunman is one kind of problem. Paradoxical journalism is another. The thing they have in common is they are both dangerous.

  • Hereticmonk

So he used an assault rifle and NO ONE was killed or injured but him? Sounds rather fishy to me. I don’t buy these cops are this good. Lets go back and remember the LA shootout. Two men with assault rifles took hours and a swat team to bring them down. And we’re supposed to believe that a few cops shot the suspect, with an assault rifle. dead and none of the cops or any of the bystanders were killed or injured? I don’t buy it.

  • rider

Those men also had fully automatic assault rifles and customized body armor. This individual was shirtless and was most likely not as well trained as the individuals who robbed the LA bank. He most likely was not planning something like this either. PS I was on that bus at the scene. The cops made no attempt to ensure either myself or the bus driver were ok. They also did not allow medical staff through to tend to the guy for awhile. The scene was more than secure enough as dozens of cops converged on the scene. They didn’t even bother securing the scene for about 10 minutes. It seemed like the entire neighborhood was out there dirtying up a crime scene.

    • Fred

You seem to suggest this event was perpetrated by the police. Had this fellow not been wandering the street with a weapon and shooting st police I sort of doubt any of this would have happened

  • oldfart

Happy 4th of july hope everyone stays clean & sober so we don’t end up in the news

    • Mace

      LOL The best comment yet!!!

  • Ed Grohosky

….IT REALLY DOESN’T MATTER !!! YOU NEVER APPROACH A LEO WITH ANYTHING IN YOUR HANDS…..EVEN A ROCK. BTW……HE SHOT AT THE OFFICER, AND THEN HID…..WHEN BACKUP ARRIVED, HE CAME OUT WITH A PISTOL AND HIS RIFLE. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE ??

  • sacking

Happy 4th of July. Please feel free to go out and exercise your 1st Amendment rights, though it would be better if you can exercise those without exercising your 2nd Amendment rights. Doing so may result in authorities exercising their 4th Amendment rights, resulting in you experiencing the guidelines of the 6th and 7th Amendments, hopefully without experiencing the 8th Amendment.

  • U.S. citizen

Me: If it was your dad I am sorry for your loss

To all the others: What happened to innocent until proven guilty? We only have the information reported by the news. We should not be making judgements until we have all the facts.

  • KP

You guys are a bunch of A holes. He didn’t fire randomly, he fired at a cop which is horrible. He was doing like many others do, using the cops to commit suicide.
The neighbors and the general public were not a target and not at risk. He was on a mission to die and he obviously succeeded. I feel for his family and the police officers that shot him, they are the people that will live with this forever!
I personally knew Bill and he had issues, obviously.

  • concerned citizen

Claiming this is an assault rifle is ridiculous. Its most likely a semi automatic (1 trigger pull = 1 bullet) “military style” rifle. Get the facts straight and stop catering to the anti-gun propaganda machine. It’s like saying generic cola and Coke are the same. Thought they share many similarities there is an obvious difference.

  • Jamie laurick

Bill was an amazing person And did not deserve that he didn’t kill anyone that day and trust me he could of he was a great shot… He would have given you the shirt of his back if you needed it.. I loved him and respect him very much… Bill rest in peace my friend. We will miss you and you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Love you very much

  • Lynne P

My thoughts and prayers to the family and friends left behind. This man was a veteran who suffered from depression, a mental illness. I feel very sad that so many fellow sacramentans have no compassion.
