Hey I’m not that great of swimmer but I think I’ll jump in a lake.

    1. David F Shultz says:

Did you know this guy? If not, don’t make assumptions. His family is grieving tonight.

        Dork Sac

      2. Bruce says:

        maybe Jaws pulled him under

      3. liz.canosa says:

thank you david. He was my close friend and I’m disgusted by those who would try to make a joke out of this. If you knew the type of person he was you would bite your tongue.

  2. linda says:

i am sorry this is so sad. i want to give thanks to two great young boys that were at Camanchie on Saturday and were able to save a stranger from drowning…Chaz and Joey Montgomery

  3. Phylis Helsby says:

When paramedics arrived, the man was still under the water and they did nothing but stand ther. i asked them to dive in and rescue him. but the were not divers! why didnt they sent some? maybe he could be alive today if the call to 911 was sooner and rescue divers were sent out there. i was furious. so sad

    1. Reality says:

Phylis… If you had to wait for paramedics to arrive, the likelihood that they could have saved him would have been slim to none unless they arrived nearly immediately. And even if they did save him at that point he likely would have suffered massive brain damage.

      Cheers!

      1. ADINA KOWALEWSKI says:

I know! they better get their act together and know what to do next time something like this happens!!!I hope they get in trouble because I can’t tell you how many people were yelling at them to “jump in” or what are you standing there for?!!!” And all that was said back by the EMT’s was “Don’t you dare yell at us!”
I am so sad about this whole situation. All I could do was go up to his mother and hug her.

  4. ADINA KOWALEWSKI says:

i WAS THERE WITH pHYLIS AND MY SON. mY SON RAN ALL THE WAY FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BEACH AND DOVE IN TO TRY AND FIND HIM, MENAWHILE THERE WERE LIKE 4 OR 5 GROWN ABLE MEN JUST STANDING THERE WATCHING !! TEY WERE MUCH CLOSER THAN WHERE MY SON WAS. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY AND MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE MOTHER AND FATHER. I THINK PARAMEDICS TOOK TOO LONG TO RESPOND TO HIM FOR LIKE 3 MINUTES THEY STOOD THERE WATCHING FROM THE SHORELINE UNTIL ANOTHER MAN WHO WAS DIVING DOWN LOOKING FOR HIM TOO, FOUND HIM AND SOMEONE WITH A JET SKI HELPED TOW BOTH OF THEM OUT. IT ANGERED ME. I THOUGHT FOR SURE SOME OF THEM WOULD BE IN THE WATER TOO. THE POOR GUY WAS UNDER FOR LIKE 10 MINUTES. MY HEART GOES OUT.

    1. Kim says:

I talked to a water rescue responder and he told me he has never pulled a body out of the water that was wearing a life vest. Bottom line wear a life vest!

      1. Adina Kowalewski says:

AMEN!! I totaly agree, but he should have done alot more, I think anyways.thats wat they are trained to do

  5. Jessica says:

My boyfriend is a park ranger at New Hogan. He was saying it was amazing paramedics got there as soon as they did. There are no lifeguards on duty and that is posted. The rangers are told not to jump in and rescue a drowning victim because of liability issues. Don’t get mad at those in uniform because they couldn’t save him. I don’t know why the man went under it is a terrible accident and there is no one to blame.

  6. liz canosa says:

He was a very close friend of mine. I would have done anything to save him. July 4th won’t be the same. :,(

    1. Adina Kowalewski says:

I’m so sorry! My son ran from the other side of the shore to try and help the man who was diving under to find him. He really took it hard when he found out he had passed. Please give his mother and father our deepest condolences!
      our prayers are with them.

      1. From the man's cousin says:

Thank you for your support. His mother and father are very very upset. They man’s pulse was pumping but they were sending him to the hospital but it was too late.

  7. scott grubb says:

I’m so sorry to here about this ! Its so sad! My prayers go out to the family.

  8. adel castaneda says:

Calavaras should be ashamed of themselves, i am one of the civilians that was in that water loking for that poor young man while our firefighters and paramedics stood and watched. i just turned 18 yrs old on june 22 and i risked my own life to be out there over 20 minutes doing what the medical response team should have been doing they would not even bring the ambulance to the young man after he was puled out. i personally confronted a fire dept. member and he replyed “what us? we do not go in the water” and soon after i was aproached my a female officer who tried to defend the fire dept. i no longer feel safe in this county, im in fear that if i get hurt i will have to go to Mark Twain Hospital and not get the treatment needed. i have also had confrontation with the calavaras EMTs because they were not giving my sister proper treatment after 2 seizures within 8 hours, the EMT walked into the waiting room and openly judged my sister in front of everybody with the remark “its because shes a doper” im outraged that they let that man die, after had saying he had a pulse when they got to him after he was pulled out. that human being died because our paramedics, sheriffs, EMTs, firefighters and mark twain did not do their jobs corectly. please if you agree with me send me a email, lets assure that our community has responsible and reliable medical response.

    1. Adina Kowalewski says:

Adel, I so totally agree with you. My son too was diving under trying to find him and I was there yelling at the EMT’s etc. while they stood there for at least 3 minutes watching! It makes me sick. All I got from them was “we are doing our jobs, do not yell at us” That in my book is B>S> and terrifing for the next person who has to be rescued by them.

  9. works n the medical feild says:

People need to understand that the people that work in the medical field must follow certain rules and procedures. If they go against these, they can be fired and then where does that leave the public, with absolutely no one there. Then on top of having to follow the rules, when you want to act out immediately to help and these rules prohibit you to, you have people yelling at you? I would like to see any of you bad mouthing these guys, do a day in their shoes. Chances are you wouldn’t last.
As for the family, I am very sorry you lost your loved one. I wish people would be more supportive to your feelings and leave out all negativity. I am sorry people must come on here and go off about stuff, when they should have more respect for those family members reading. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  10. Adina Kowalewski says:

What is being said here is that “we” were at a lake, where they should have someone trained to dive and help Especially on a holiday knowing there are going to be incidents

  11. someone who cares says:

Its hard to have divers on hand at a lake with the way the economy is…I dont disagree with you, but are you going to shell out the money for that? I sure as heck dont think Calaveras will. It was a tragedy what happened. I believe that there is nothing that could have been done to save the young man. It was a very tragic accident.

    1. Adina Kowalewski says:

I’m talking about someone who is already an EMT here in Calaveras CO. You would be amazed at how many people have a diving license just for recreational use! They need someone on Holidays or weekends!

      1. someone who cares says:

A recreational diving license isn’t the same as a search and rescue. It would be nice if the county had someone available at all times, but “someone who cares” is right. They won’t pay for it. If they do it at one lake, they would have to do it all all the areas. The areas are swim at your own risk unfortunately. It would be nice if they had the life jacket stations like the Sacramento rivers. It would be cheaper then staffing personal if everyone would use them.

  12. Someone who cares says:

New Hogan does offer the life jacket program it’s up by their pay booth for the boat ramp. It would be smart to have one down in the free day use section. With drownings the hardest thing is if you aren’t watching every family member in the water you could never know when they go under. It is all an accident and unfortunately there is no one to blame.

    1. Adina Kowalewski says:

This whole thing has really affected me, everyday and every night before I try and sleep. I totally understand where you are coming from with everything you have said.I know about our deficit , and before this whole traumatic experience, I had NO idea that EMT’s, or any rescue team wasn’t aloud to at least jump in and save someone who is in trouble and under water!!! I am just voicing my opinion, because until that tragedy happened, I thought that that was what they were trained to do, NOT GET FIRED FOR IT OR IN TROUBLE!!!! I just think That is scary for the general public, because most of us thought that they are here to do all that and then some.!!! I still see them as heroes, I just think it’s preposterous that they can’t do their job to the fullest, part of their training should be water rescue, I AM SURE SOME OR A LOT OF THE RESCUERS WERE FRUSTRATED WITH HOW THEIR SYSTEM WORKS !!! I KNOW IF I WERE ONE OF THEM, I’D PROBABLY HAD GOTTEN FIRED THAT DAY,BECAUSE I’D HAVE BEEN IN THAT WATER LOOKING FOR THAT YOUNG MAN OR ANYONE ELSE IN PERIL

      1. Adina Kowalewski says:

ABOUT THE LIFE JACKET PROGRAM… I’VE BEEN GOING TO HOGAN FOR YEARS AND HAD NO CLUE ABOUT THE LIFE JACKET PROGRAM!!!!! IT SHOULD ALSO CONSIST OF THE PEOPLE THAT ENJOY THE FREE BEACH AREA!!!
