Burglary Suspect Found Hiding In Pool

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) -- A Sacramento County burglary suspect is now behind bars, but where was he when police were looking for him? Holding his breath and hoping he wouldn't get caught.

Eric Burtleson was busted for trying to bust into a nice home with a pool on Coppertree Way. After tripping an alarm in the garage, Burtleson had nowhere to run, but he did have somewhere to hide.

The sheriff's helicopter was quickly overhead, but deputies just couldn't find him.

"Police and the fire department were going back and forth there for well over an hour," said a neighbor. "They kept going in the back looking and looking and they'd go back in."

For well over an hour there was no sign of the suspect, just a bloody trail that led to the backyard. Burtleson had cut himself.

One deputy checked poolside and spotted fingers holding on.

"And when they walked over, there was a guy hiding," said the homeowner. "He didn't have a shirt on. He was wearing a pair of shorts. They said he sounded inebriated."

Burtleson was allegedly drunk and definitely drenched from deep water to deep trouble.

"What kind of criminals hide in pools these days? I didn't think we had the smartest guy," said the homeowner.

"That's astonishing. [A] great place to hide," said a neighbor.

Tonight Burtleson is treading the rough waters of the justice system. As for getting out of jail anytime soon, Eric Burtleson better not be holding his breath this time because he's being held without bail for an out-of-state warrant.
