Gunbattle Breaks Out During Yuba County Pot Bust

YUBA COUNTY, Calif. (AP) -- Yuba County sheriff's officials say deputies exchanged gunfire with a suspect during their raid of an illegal marijuana grow site, but the man got away.

Authorities spent several hours searching by ground and air for the suspect after the confrontation around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. They called off the search shortly before noon.

Sheriff's Lt. Damon Gil says a team of deputies tried to detain a man spotted at the pot garden near the town of Dobbins, but he fired a shot at them and began running into some brush. The deputies fired several shots back.

No deputies were hurt in the incident, and it's unknown if the suspect was struck by any bullets.

KUBA Radio reports that authorities have destroyed at least 1,500 marijuana plants at the site.
