Copper Thieves Hit School Twice Over Weekend

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) -- Police say that thieves targeted an empty elementary school looking for copper.

Harmon Johnson Elementary was broken into twice over the weekend, with the incidents just hours apart.

In both cases, the suspects were caught trying to steal copper wire.

"Two on the same day is a bit abnormal, but our calls for service here are just about average," said Twin Rivers police spokesman William Cho."

Late last year the school board closed the elementary because it sits near a high-pressure gas pipeline.

Three suspects were arrested, while one managed to escape.

Police believe the two break-ins were related.
