Elderly Man Left For Dead After Brutal Beating

WOODLAND, Calif. (CBS13) -- An elderly man was severely beaten and left for dead in an apparently random attack, authorities said.

Pascual Lopez, 74, was washing one of his cars outside of his Woodland home when someone bludgeoned his face and head, leaving the victim with massive internal injuries and a fractured skull.

A neighbor saw a young man fleeing the scene shortly after the attack, according to Woodland Police Officer Sgt. Steve Guthrie.

"He was lying in a large pool of blood. Initially, officers thought maybe he was shot, that's how much blood there was," Guthrie said.

There is no clear motive for the violence, but police said the incident may have started as a robbery attempt.

Lopez's family members are staying by his side at the UC Davis Medical Center and said they can't comprehend the brutality of the unprovoked attack.

"He's always nice, he's trying to help the people around him all the time," said Lopez's daughter Adianna. "They tried to kill my dad. That's the way I see it."

Investigators said the only description they have of the suspect is a white male who is approximately six feet tall.
