You might think that being the host of a high-profile TV show would cause a performer to watch his mouth.

You’d be wrong.

At least in the case of Adam Carolla, the comedian who is also one of the hosts of “The Car Show,” which launched in July on Speed TV.

In his most recent podcast, using the tongue-in-cheek Internet campaign to have Sesame Street‘s Bert and Ernie get married, Carolla embarked on a foul-mouthed and abusive rant against gay, lesbian, and transgendered people.

He even named names, going so far as target Cher’s son Chaz Bono (born Chastity) specifically.

Confusingly, he claimed LGBTQ people are “ruining his life” and commanded all of them to “shut up.”

It could almost bring to mind the famous quote, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

We’ve editing out the NSFW parts of his rant, of which there are quite a few. Read here for some of the uglier, more graphic language.

Needless to say, protest and pushback arrived immediately.

Carolla then tweeted a half-hearted non-apology, saying, “I’m sorry my comments were hurtful. That being said, I’m a comedian, not a politician.”

And there it stands.

But the GayWheels blog (republished by Jalopnik) raises an interesting question: Could the backlash over Carolla’s anti-gay rant damage, or even kill, “The Car Show”?

As certain other public figures have learned at their peril, propounding venomous anti-gay slurs on air tends to scare advertisers. We’re lookin’ at you, Dr. Laura. And, more recently, Tracy Morgan.

Let’s be clear: We draw a clear distinction between a polite statement of principles (e.g. “I personally don’t agree with same-sex marriage, but I recognize that others feel differently”) and the kind of potty-mouth teen bigotry that Carolla engaged in.

So we’d like to get your views on two related questions. First, do you think “The Car Show” will suffer from Carolla’s comments? And, second, should his comments in a personal webcast affect the show?

Leave us your thoughts in the Comments below. We’re confident you’ll keep it polite and family-friendly.

Never heard of The Car Show or Carolla.

  • Tracy

im a transexual and i thought some of it was kinda funny, can’t any one take a joke anymore. This sounds like a push from wealthy liberals because it was chaz bono that was made fun of

The advertsers will kill the show over Carolla’s stupid and insenstive remarks.
Even though he made the remarks on his own blog, or what ever, it is now in the public domane. His so called apology is a joke.
If this is what we are to expect from some one in the public eye, then he should be held up to public redicule.

In deference to Tracy’s previous comment… I’m neither wealthy or liberal, and I found his remarks offensive. Just because something is funny (I didn’t personally think it was funny) doesn’t mean it’s not offensive. There are plenty of racist and sexist jokes that are funny, but exceptionally offensive.

I think Carolla’s totally unnecessary hurtful rant against LGBT people SHOULD damage his career, and SHOULD have an adverse affect on any project he’s associated with, including the Car Show.

His objection that he’s “a comedian not a politician” is not an excuse for aggrivating further animosity toward a group of people who face daily discrimination, prejudice, and persecution throughout the world. He’s basically saying, hey, as long as I think it’s funny, I should be allowed to be as offensive as i want, and hurt anyone I want without having to face any consequences.

I support freedom of speech, but with that freedom comes the obligation to be responsible for your actions and the damage you cause. It is not a license to trample on other people’s rights.

Adan has the right to express his opinion. some people do not think he has that right (maybe even the person that wrote this article). With that said, his show is on the speed network or some other lame a$$ channel. Frankely, who cares? Did Chaz get offended or did Chaz have to wait until some one pointed it out to him. People, get real, you most likely didn’t even know until it was pointed out to you. Grow thicker skins!!!!
