Nevada County Sheriff's Accountant Suspected Of Stealing $13,000

NEVADA CITY (CBS13) -- An accountant at the Nevada County Sheriff's Office is suspected of embezzling $13,000 from a county jail program.

Yvonne Cantrell, 45, is accused of collecting thousands of dollars from inmates at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility and never depositing the money.

Sheriff's Capt. Joe Salivar said Cantrell was a senior accountant at the jail when they got a tip last September that the six-year employee was allegedly embezzling money from the jail.

Salivar said internal and independent investigations showed that $13,000, mostly from the inmate home detention program, was missing. It was never deposited.

And when investigators started digging deeper, the money trail showed the alleged embezzlement went back almost to the beginning of Cantrell's employment.

"We went back to 2005, 2006 I believe, and we started discovering those crimes," Salivar said.

Cantrell worked at the jail for seven years before she was let go earlier this year. Before that she spent three years working for another county department.

She was in court for a pretrial conference Monday but it was continued until Oct. 3.
