SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sacramentans will be able to keep their chickens.

Tuesday night, Sacramento City leaders passed an ordinance allowing people to keep up to three chickens in their back yards.

No roosters would be allowed.

The birds would have to be in coops or cages at all times and would need to be at least 20 feet from neighboring homes.

The new ordinance goes into affect Nov. 1.

    Absolutely ignorant law.

LOL no roosters. Sexing baby chickens is not foolproof… you always get roosters in a batch of baby “hens”. They want people to kill the roosters when they find they got one by mistake? I dont see that happening.

what about the stray cats that my neighbor feeds everyday. are they going to eat the chickens on my yard?

  • Mark King

Hideous – and how much did we spend on this worthless law? FOOD first. How will 3 egg-laying hens feed a family? Nice try.

Lol, hey roosters are always killed for eating otherwise they are useless, can’t lay eggs lol now I have heard everything coming from the state capital lol.

Stoopid lawmakers….imagine all the chicken poo…have you ever kept chickens before? Totally ignorant use of lawmakers time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is awesome – looking forward to my fresh unmolested eggs :) I’m building a suburban chicken coop from http://www.simplecoops.com plans. They’re local and it looks like an easy build and a good size for a couple-3 hens

[...] post! But, I can't close out this post without showing you the new chicken coops they're carrying! Sacramento City has FINALLY passed an ordinance that allows people to keep up to three chickens in their backyard. Now the only thing standing [...]

Building my coop now and yes I will likely be breaking the rules in having more than 3 and without paying for pernmit either. What someone gonna do..ask for my papers or climb in my yard to see how many? Is just about money mongering and pasification of the outraged that law passed. They just doing the ‘pc’ thing…with overheads involved in taking care of and feeding them I fully expect it to be more like keeping pets rather than something of production to feed my family. 3 hens is lame..
