Man Shot After Domestic Standoff With SWAT

GRASS VALLEY (CBS13) -- A suspect was shot and killed late Saturday afternoon after he allegedly barricaded himself into his home and began assaulting his girlfriend, authorities said.

Nevada County deputies were called to the scene for a domestic disturbance and were confronted by a man who was holding a knife to his girlfriend's throat. The suspect demanded that deputies leave the area, and authorities called in the county SWAT team.

Negotiators were unable to make any contact with the suspect during the five-hour standoff, according to Nevada County Sheriff's Captain Jeff Powell.

After the man barricaded himself inside the home, he allegedly began to brutally assault his hostage, authorities said.

"We felt we had to make entry, so the SWAT team" went in, Powell said.

The suspect was shot once and died at the scene. The injured victim was rushed out of the home for treatment and is expected to recover.

Investigators will continue documenting the scene of the shooting Sunday morning.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.
