Elk Grove Business Evacuated Due To Gas Leak

ELK GROVE (CBS13) – The smell of gas forced the evacuation of an Elk Grove business this morning, according to the Cosumnes Fire Department.

The owner of Any Event Party Rentals at 9251 Elk Grove Blvd. said she smelled gas when she opened the store this morning and told all her employees to get outside. She then called PG&E and the fire department.

"Soon as I turned off the alarm and walked up to the counter and said let's go outside. The smell was really strong," said owner Linda Hall. "I was a little nervous with gas, you just don't know, anything could happen."

Hall told fire fighters the smell of gas was strongest toward the back of the store. Crews eventually found the source. It was a tiny hole about the size of a pinprick in a natural gas line connected to one of the business's dryers.

Fire fighters say the business owner handled the situation perfectly by getting out and calling authorities.

"I think we've seen in recent memory massive destruction," said Cosumnes Fire Department Batt. Chief Sean Stumbaugh. "I won't speculate what would have occurred but there was a problem we needed to fix."

The employees are back to work. No one was hurt.
