Updated: Highway 101 Re-Open After Tanker Accident

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) – Southbound Highway 101 is back open following an early morning accident the Interstate 80 split, which had closed all lanes of traffic in that direction.

The California Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred shortly after 5:00 a.m. when a big-rig truck crashed and overturned, causing its cab to catch on fire. Three other cars were also involved in the accident. The CHP issued a Sigalert and advised commuters to use alternate routes.

The driver of the big-rig suffered moderate injuries and a woman involved in the crash also suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to a local hospital.

Caltrans and CHP officials had expected the freeway to remain closed until 12:00 p.m. while crews clear the big-rig from the area and check the safety of the roadway.

After the crash, a fight reportedly broke out near the scene between two motorists with at least one suffering a head injury. One of the motorists was detained by the CHP.

Officials are still investigating exactly what caused the crash to occur.
