Former San Quentin Worker Facing Drug Charges

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) -- A former worker at San Quentin State Prison is facing possible prison time over allegations he brought marijuana into the prison to sell to an inmate.

The Marin Indepedent Journal reports that Robert Alioto is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on charges of bringing a controlled substance into a state prison, selling or furnishing a controlled substance to a prisoner and possession of marijuana for sale.

Alioto was not a sworn correctional officer at the prison, but worked as a warehouse supervisor.

Prison officials say after his arrest on Oct. 5 he was fired from his job.

If the 48-year-old Alioto is convicted of the charges, prosecutors say he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Alioto's attorney, Brooke Halsey, says Alioto will plead not guilty during his arraignment Monday.
